Hi there!

SO this week I'v been feeling like rubbish, most importantly I'm very dumbed down. I can't think clearly and get confused. Can't remember words, read one thing but understand a different thing all together, bad memory, you name it!

Is this normal? I'm currently on 50mg levothyroxine

Thansk!

You are very welcome to our forum, Sharim.

The very first thing you must do is ask for a new blood test for your Thyroid Hormones. 50mcg is a miserly dose but we will go step by step.

Request a Full Thyroid Function from your GP. A TSH, T4, T3, Free T4 and Free T3 also Vitamin B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

Few labs will do them all if our TSH and T4 are in range so you might have to get a private test to enable you to see what hormones are actually in your system.

The test MUST be the earliest possible and fast (you can drink water) and don't take levo for about 24 hours and take it after blood test.

Get a print-out of your results with the ranges and put them on a new post for comments.

It is a big learning curve and we have to know more than the poorly educated doctors and endos about the importance of the thyroid gland. Only if they develop it themselves will they sit up and take notice.

Many people seem to do fine on levothyroxine but if dose is too low it isn't sufficient for our body as it is required in every part of our body.

You have clinical symptoms at present and must feel very rough.

T3

0.95 ng/mL

T4

1.01 ng/dL

T4 (total)

7.3 μg/dL

TSH

2.31

These were done abroad about 8 months ago (but I was on the same dose), the last one my GP never showed them to me.

Sharim, it's not possible to interpret T4 and T3 results without the ranges. TSH was a bit high for someone on Levothyroxine and indicates undermedication. Most people will be comfortable with TSH 1.0 or lower, with FT4 in the upper range, and FT3 in the top third of range. Ask your GP receptionist or practice manager for a copy of your recent results and ranges and post them in a new question for advice.

Welcome to the forum, Sharim.

The symptoms you describe are often called 'brain fog'. It's a fairly common symptom when thyroid levels are low. If you post your recent thryoid results with ranges (figures in brackets after results) members will advise whether you are optimally medicated.

I got some bloodwork done today, awaiting for the results. I actually cried today when I realised I couldn't actually do my job because my brain is mush!

Actually, you're not converting very well, are you. Your FT3 is too low in range for you to feel well. An increase in Levo might help a bit, but what you really need is some T3 added to your Levo to raise your FT3. Doubtful your doctor will give you that - but Worth asking. If all else fails, you could always buy your own.

Following Clutters comments your T3 is low and not optimal. You need more levo.
