TRH Test

I'm having a TRH test on Friday to see if I've got central hypothyroidism. The Endo doesn't seem convinced though.

Are there any tips I should follow before the test? E.g fasting etc?

Also if I have primary hypo with just a lower TSH do you know if this would show up on the TRH test or would it just come back as normal?

Your very lucky. I'm central and have never been offered a TRH test. 😞 which does make me sound a bit strange!!!

I would just be curious to have one.....might ask for one.....

The TRH test should determine primary from central.

Either way you should get a definitive result of either tertiary, secondary or primary hypothyroidism.

Seriously you are very lucky to get a TRH test because they don't offer them to many.

I just looked at your previous posts and you do look as if you've got central hypo, similar to me. Why doesn't your endo seem convinced?

Hi Joesmum,

He's not convinced as I'm only just under the reference range and he's checked some of my other pituitary hormones and they are normal. He thinks having a FT4 of 11 may just be normal for me. This is why he's doing the test as he won't medicate me if it comes

back normal.

I see your FT4 is a lot lower than mine, so presumably that's why they didn't need to do one on you?

I'm not looking forward to it as I hate needles and there are drips/injections and multiple blood draws. Eek. But at least hopefully I will get an answer.

Did you find out which type of central you had and why your TSH wasn't higher? Did you have an MRI?

Apparently I'm tertiary ( hypothalamus). I did have a pituitary scan which showed a wonky shaped pituitary gland with a domed surface. There was no adenoma though. My pituitary hormones are normal so I believe but what does 'normal' mean!

In order to get my FT4 and FT3 high enough my TSH is incredibly low.
