Moving to UK with Graves

Hi Everyone,

Quick question. I'm an Irish citizen with Graves Disease. Recently I've been offered a job in the UK, and would like to know could my Graves be treated in the UK? I'll be working as a full time chef, but I don't want people to think I'm a health tourist as I know the NHS is stretched to the limit. Thanks in advance.

Gavin

You need to find a doctor that suits your needs! Were I you I would ask at any chemists in the area if they dispense NDT or T3.

Where in the UK are you headed? (A rough region would be good.) The NHS in the UK delivers different services by country and then by region in that country.

I cannot see it being a problem.

I looked at your profile and there is no mention of you being seen by an Endocrinologist. Gp's are really not qualified in dealing with Graves disease so you should seek a referral and it would be better done after you move and register with a new GP.

Also if you start having any problems with your eyes, you will need a referral to an Ophthalmologist to rule out Thyroid Eye Disease.

If you see an endocrinologist in Ireland your best bet would be to ask her/him to write to your GP in England (a "to whom this may concern" in advance of finding a GP would do it) to request a referral.
