Hi I wonder if anybody could advise me I had underactive thyroid for 20 odd years and not had many problems a few months ago my doctor took me off my medication saying I was now over I have seen an endo who has now suggested I have RAI which should be happening within a few weeks I keep reading on hear about vitamins to take can anybody suggest one that has got everything in it that you need rather than take lots of them as I am so tired all the time and am really worried about my hair as it is thinning really badly. Also why do you have to have RAI if it can be controlled with medication.

So, I'm guessing your TSH was a bit low, and now they want to nuke your thyroid????? That is so over-the-top it is almost, but not quite, unbelievable.

Did anything about your diet or lifestyle or medications change that could have triggered a major change in your thyroid test results?

How well have you coped with no medication after 20 years being on levo?

What justification have you been given for the proposed RAI treatment?

I am guessing that you have autoimmune thyroid disease, you have had a major flare of antibody activity, and your thyroid hormone levels have increased as a result of the antibodies killing off thyroid cells which then release the thyroid hormone the cells contain. Your TSH will drop as a result. But it will be temporary. Flare ups die down again. Your TSH will go back up, and you could be seriously hypo again.

Jayjayjules, RAI is usually given to hyperthyroid (overactive) patients when remission fails. If you were previously happy on Carbimazole or PTU your medication should be reinstated. Your GP and endo can't force you to accept RAI which will make you hypothyroid.

There is no multivitamin which will give you everything you need. Ask your GP to test ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and folate which are commonly low in thyroid patients. Post the results with ranges (figures in brackets after results) in a new question and members will advise whether you need to supplement.

Would have thought that to combat tiredness yuou take high dose vitamin b and iron. But a lot of other minerals and vitamins are quite useful. Selenium is helpful to the thyroid - and it is best to be natural - so I eat brazil nuts. Iodine - though some would argue the toss on that one. But it has helped me and others. Magnesium. Potassium. Vitamin C. But it is cheaper to get a multi than get them separately.

I have just completed a practitioner course with The Hashimoto's Institute and the chemist there suggested that 200mcg per day should be taken if a therapeutic effect is required. In this case Brazil nuts may not be effective. That said you are absolutely right that selenium should always be considered as part of thyroid support.

A medium size brazil nut contains about 50 and I make sure I take enough to cover 200 mcg.

Her point was that she had tried Brazil nuts without success (though she did not state how many) and her symptoms improved once on a measured daily dose. Her concern was that the amount per nut was dependent on for example soil content, so was no guarantee of intake. I think that if you can work with Brazil nuts and find relief then great, but if not try supplements and see if they bring better results.

Understand and have read similar things before. But I always get the same nuts, so the soil content wont change. And a lot of research says that it is far better to have natural selenium than synthetic, which can turn back on itself and do damage. Selenium is also very important to avoid breast cancer. I also take a multi vitamin mineral which contains 200 of selenium each day too, so well covered.

Natures Best have a good range of multi vitamins & minerals. They are owned by Lamberts and most of the products are identical and sometimes cheaper.

Hi JayjayJules

I started with an overactive thyroid some ten years ago. I had RAI about 8 years ago, if I had the choice now I would NEVER have had it I put 3 stone on in weight in twelve months, I'm always tired, depressed, aches and pains, itching dry skin, problems with my eyes, hair, I could go on and on. If I was you I definitely would not have the RAI, knowing what I know now, stick to medication and self medication if needs be.

Good luck

Gwendoline

Lab work is unreliable. Go off temperature and pulse. I encourage you to check out the work of both Broda Barnes and Raymond Peat. There are groups that can guide you. Most traditional doctors rely on lab work which don't paint the whole picture. If you have hyperthyroid, just drink cabbage juice. You do not have to resort to such nonsense
