Hi, I started taking the tablets I purchased from India, and so far so good (against all advice)! Not like me generally but was desperate.

I have to say I do not understand most of the talk on this site, is it American, what is T3?

I went to the doctor back in 2000, with under active thyroid problems, they put me on Levothyroxine 150, never any problems! Felt better after first tablet. The only trouble I have now is because I travel with my work and am never in one place at at time! The NHS does not cater for this!

There is a lot of information available on the main Thyroid UK web site:

Levothyroxine is T4 which your body coverts to Liothyronine T3 which is the active hormone that gives you energy and well being.

As you body appears to tolerate and convert T4 well, you would not need to consider adding or replacing with other thyroid meds.

Levothyroxine is the first ( & usually only) treatment of choice offered by UK doctors and works well for most. However, there's a small subset of people who don't do well on Levo and hence our forum.

If you travel constantly & don't have a UK address, I don't know how you can source your meds except to buy them yourself. Levothyroxine is very inexpensive compared to some other options.

We are an English site and only use correct English terminology.

OK - approximately 15 percent of hypo patients don't get fully better on levothyroxine alone. This is due to a myriad of causes. I don't feel more than 50 per cent on levo because I have a gene issue which means I can't convert the active compound in levo (T4) into the actual stuff the body uses which is the T3.

The 15 per cent who don't get on with levo can either take levo in combination with t3, take only t3 and/or take natura thyroid (ndt) which is pills made from dessicated animal thyroids. Ndt contains all thyroid hormones (therr are several).

Does that help?

TpR,

The O/P has stated she feels well on Levothyoxine.

Yes she does but is asking what is T3 which I explained and I added in info on ndt for balance. I did state that only around 15 per cent don't get on with levo and by implication had assumed o/p was part of the 85 per cent that do
