Fluid retention, weight gain on NDT. Raise dose or change brand?

Hi all,

After many trials and tribulations, i found (through the great people of this site) Thyroid S in August 2015 and haven't looked back. For 5 long months i felt great, normal, all symptoms disappeared. I was on 3 grains and rose to 3 1/4 in November 2015.

Recently i have had loads of fluid retention and can't lose weight anymore (roughly 2 stone overweight). I don't know if i should change brand and try armour etc, or add T3 or just stick it out?! Symptoms wise everything else is great, nails, bowels, hair, body temperature, mental health etc etc so I don't know what to do.

Any advice please?

Ticklek, I think it would be a good idea to have a thyroid function test including FT3 to see whether you are optimally medicated before changing dose or brand.

I agree with Clutter that blood needs to be tested - it might just be that you need an increase.

Do you take your temperature often? When hypo we usually have low temp which I've read can lead to water retention. We usually also have a low pulse. When on an optimum of thyroid hormones our temp/pulse rises although temp might not return to what it used to be before being hypo.

Thank you for your replies.

Shaws, i dont take my temperature, i need to get an appropriate thermometer and start taking it i think. I do take my pulse fairly regularly, before starting any treatment my pulse was around 56bpm and just now its 74bpm so definitely feel theres improvement there.

Thanks again

We cannot get Mercury thermometers anymore, for the obvious reason - they contain mercury :) but get one that doesn't beep if you at any time do a Basal Temp test. It should be underarm before getting out of bed.

Yet the establishment is still happy to put mercury in people's teeth - the mind boggles, does it not

Agree with other posters that you need a blood test - make sure it includes t3. You can arrange this yourself without a doctor's referral
