Thanks for posting this - have sent the link to my step daughter who has crippling IBS at times. I'm already a convert to vitamin D.

My doctor just confirmed that I have a systemic reaction to thyroid medication that causes my IBS and swallowing problems. Dosen't matter which one I take... Might want to consider that if you are on medication.

PamaRonaRanch, is the reaction to Liothyronine (T3) and natural dessicated thyroid like Armour as well as Levothyroxine?

Yes. All. Synthroid, levothyroxine, Armour, Nature-throid, liothyronine, tirosint. All in differing ways and over a period of time so it was not evident what was causing the problems. All caused severe enough reactions to be admitted to the hospital many times. I didn't have digestive problems until I began taking thyroid in 2003 Since then IBS, dyphagia, and lately headaches and muscle aches. .I feel better than I have in 12 years after getting off the thyroid in late summer/ early fall. I am waiting for the doctor's decision as to where to proceed from here. My tests are just barely out of the norm.

I have been told to take magnesium with calcium. it is possible to adjust the doses to get the most benefit without causing digestive disruption. Some manufacturers also make a combination of the two.

PamaRonaRanch, sorry to hear of your difficulties with thyroid replacement. We have one or two members who've been unable to tolerate any form of replacement.

It would be good to hear from/about them as well and know how they have been able to cope with the situation as it may help me personally as well as them to find we are all in the same boat medically.

PamaRonaRanch, as far as I know they had to give up on thyroid replacement.

That is probably where I am headed.

Just a followup... I finally went to a really great endocrinologist. Since he also takes thyroid, he understands it very well. He took all the proper tests, including antibodies, and has determined that my symptoms were in fact caused by thyroid medications of all types that I probably never needed in the first place. 6 months off thyroid medication and I feel better each day. I missed 12 years of healthy life because of the failure of many doctors to acknowledge that thyroid medication could be causing the problems. I will always be monitored to make sure things don't get out of hand, but at least at this point, life is really good without thyroid medication!
