Thyroid nodules. What happens now?

I was due a 6 week post partum thyroid check at the end of November to reassess my levothyroxine levels which were raised to 75mcg while pregnant. I have hypothyroidism, with suspected Hashimotos (tsh receptor antibodies 3800!)

However I missed this appointment, but on tuesday found a small peasized lump about an inch under the left side of my jaw. I saw my g.p Wednesday who on examination found a further 3 lumps of the same size lower down on my thyroid on the same side.

She said she wants me to come back in 2 weeks to see if there is any change.

I am concerned about having to wait so long. Should I be being referred?

The whole area feels quite tender to the touch. Additionally, I was very unwell during this pregnancy. Symptoms included face upper chest and neck flushing, loose stools and diarrhoea that was worse at night, a thick eczma-like rash on my neck around my thyroid, tightness in my neck chest and throat causing breathlessness, stiff joints.

At first this was put down to pregnancy hormones but the symptoms are still ongoing.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Hugs84, thyroid nodules are extremely slow growing so there isn't a problem in waiting 2 weeks for your GP to see whether there is any change. As nodules are usually around 1cm by the time they become palpable it may be an idea to ask your GP to order an ultrasound scan to image the size and condition of your thyroid gland and nodules. If the nodules look suspicious on the ultrasound a fine needle aspiration biopsy will be arranged and 95% of thyroid nodules will be benign. Try not to poke and prod as the nodules will become sore and inflamed.
