Help hyperthyroidism and high iron level

Just been diagnosed with an over thyroid and now high levels of iron in my blood. Am taking 40 mg of Carbimozole but am concerned about the impact this medication could be having on my liver and other organs. My gp rang me up to say that he didn't know anything about what to do about the high level of iron so referred my to another specialist. I have an appointment with an endocrinology in Jan. Haven't heard any more about my other hospital apt so really don't know what to do. If anyone has had any similar blood results can you pls at least tell me more. I am feeling exhausted and the just want to cry the whole time.

Suzie22, Liver function is usually tested along with thyroid function when Carbimazole is prescribed to monitor liver enzymes. Iron overload is called haemochromatosis. If iron levels are very high regular venous withdrawal like blood donation may be required.

I don't know anything about the iron levels but I have been on carbimazole for 5 yrs with no trouble with my liver function. If you are going to have a problem taking it it usually happen in the first few months. I was scared stiff at the beginning. Just remember those regular blood tests. I was a cry baby for a few weeks. Hope you feel better soon.

I know this is an old post but what happened about your iron levels. I have recently been diagnosed with a relapse of Graves and my iron levels and liver enzyme ALT are raised. I'm waiting to see an endo.

Blimey Clutter, liver function tests done? I wish I knew where this healthcare was!!

As Duster said, I have read that liver problems occur in the first few months, but if you are worried ask to have the appropriate tests done (I was never offered the test, by GP or Endo and had to ask myself)

One of the most important things is not to let them keep your dosage of Carbimazole high (unless you are having Block & Replace) else you will go hypo. If they dont suggest it, ask to be tested approximately every 8-10 weeks.

You need to have your antibodies tested to see if you have Graves disease.

Try eating well and resting, as hyperthyroidism takes so much out of you. Also try to avoid stressful situations (and yes I know Christmas if coming!). Be kind to yourself.

I cannot help with the high iron.
