Undiagnosed as yet but getting more symptoms.

So far my blood results have been mainly within range one below ft4 and increasing TSH 3.24. I'm now getting groin and hip pain and sore mouth and tongue. Could these be related. Getting no help from DR's or consultants who say not hypothyroid.

Thanks.

my hip pain was blamed on excessive sport and arthritis my hip pain escalated into chronic hip, knees, ankles, heel and back pain, years of morphine based pain killers didnt help but when i started on thyroid meds the pain went!! so i would say a very good chance it is related.

Thanks Binkie, I have pain all over my body, feet especially and hands, all the DR's keep saying is results within range and take amytriptaline to stop pain.

i have absolutely no idea why my pain was connected to my thyroid, i dont understand the connection, it is a common symptom but once on thyroid medication the pain went.

I took lots of strong drugs to control the pain, mostly they knocked me out. i can not tell you the joy i felt to be able to get out of bed and walk without my ankles and feet screaming in pain and also locked solid as if shackled.

i hope you get it sorted.

My hands lock up like that and my feet and ankles are constantly painful along with intermittent shoulder and back pain.

Don’t underestimate the power of that little gland. It is the master control center for the metabolic functions of every single cell in your body. Therefore it has the power to disrupt every part of your body and to produce profound changes in every aspect of your life. Scientific research links hypothyroidism to heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, gall bladder disease, liver disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. The Thyroid Federation International estimates there are up to 300 million people worldwide experiencing thyroid dysfunction, yet over half are presumed to be unaware of their condition. Despite research connecting an underactive thyroid to some of the deadliest diseases of our time, the hypothyroidism epidemic sweeping across the globe has gone largely unrecognized by the mainstream medical community. Are you sure you are ready for this long pathetic list of symptoms

Thank you I will digest all this info. I do actuall feel like I'm slowly falling apart and almost every part of my body is affected. I've gone from a fit reasonably healthy person to a tired aching wreck. All I've asked for is a trial of thyroxine but the DR's won't do it.

mandy take heart and a tiny bit of inner strength. This is not a quick fix illness (more's the pity) I have been a sports person all my life, I was fit, strong, slim and the life of every party. I ended up a half alive wreck but I am now getting better, the despair of my untreated illness not so far behind me I cant remember.

My Dr belittled me and fobbed me off with every drug in his book except the one drug that would help me!! ironic really, now I'm getting better all the antidepressants, valium, pain meds, gastric meds, antibiotics, eczema steroid creams & sprays are no longer needed, in fact from week 4 were not needed, I still have bags full in case (not sure in case of what as they never helped or worked)

hypothyroid can be treated with or without your dr's help, I am proof of that. I do not know enough of the technical stuff to advise you but there are lots of people who can, I listened and read the advice, I followed other peoples advice about getting healthy, gluten free and my vits an mins optimal, I took an adrenal supplement and then ( i was terrified) self treated, it was a massive leap of faith for me but god bless everyone who helped me it is working. I am sitting at my work desk and some days I could cry with happiness instead of the old misery!

As soon as my dr saw the difference he WANTED to give me thyroxine, ironic again! There are some brilliant people who really know their stuff and they offer it for free and with love, use the wisdom and start gently to heal yourself. I don't know the why's or where for's about this annoying illness but I will answer if I can and I am here if you need to chat xx

Mandy I think you will have to self-medicate.

Before these blood tests/levo were introduced we were diagnosed on clinical symptoms and given a trial of NDT, No-one died - the trial either worked or didn't. It is only hormones not some illegal drug. Many have felt so much better when they've bought their own.

My hypothesis is that it's all the meds that go with the illnesses mentioned above that disrupts the thyroid and it's treatment , all pass through the liver, get into the blood stream and carried to the brain - the nerve control centre - the neurotransmitters!

I've stopped all prescribed or OTC pharmaceutical meds except Levo and feeling a great deal better for it. now liver is fully detoxified from chemically produced meds, I've been able to concentrate on making sure my Levo dosage is at optimum level making my metabolism work better. I'll never now stop believing that not taking all other meds, most prescribed for anxiety or depression - my doctors words because I kept asking questions - not mine. I'm neither anxious or depressed just frustrated by several personal issues concerning my housing and lack of info re definitive cirrhosis diagnosis, and never having the practical physiological help I needed after the BI, it's almost 3 yrs since I was told I have a 'blood disorder' still waiting for proper medical confirmation and diagnosis/prognosis, as they e spent their time ruling out everything they thought of relative to that and cirrhosis with no treatment needed and I don't feel ill from either.

Different to feeling like CxxxP with docs prescription meds - feel totally different now, like my old self, and yes like people with nothing wrong and not on meds, I do have my occasional off day, but am virtually totally pain free except one foot (had 3 ops over the years on it). Still convinced a lot started re my thyroid, way back when as a baby with my 1st infection!

It may be Gout. Ask your GP to arrange blood tests.

Did you have your blood test as early as possible? If not request another and if GP wont do it get a print-out of your previous results with the ranges and post on a new question. Ask for TSH, T4, T3, FT3 and FT4 also for Vit B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

Many people have undiagnosed hypothyroidism as doctors don't know/recognise clinical symptoms. The UK must be the worst country in the world for their dogmatic 'not till theTSH reaches 10' will they get a prescription. In the meantime the TSH might NEVER reach 10 and people will have a miserable existence with the clinical symptoms due to very low metabolism may lose their jobs, marriage, friends etc.

Some countries medicate when your TSH reaches 3 and this is what Thyroiduk.org.uk says about the figures:-

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

If you can afford a Private Test it might be worth it. TSH, T4, T3, FT4 and FT3. Tests for your thyroid gland should be as early as possible, fasting (you can drink water). If on replacement hormones leave about 24 hours between the last dose and the blood test.

The guidelines are awful and there must be thousands of extremely unwell people in the UK treated for anything other than a deficiency in thyroid hormones - some sectioned. They are also usually, if finally diagnosed, given too low a dose to recover as the doctor now tries to keep the TSH 'within the range' when it should be around 1 or lower.

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

There's a lot to learn and never in my life would I have thought I'd have to read so much but with the help of TUK I have recovered my health. It can be a slow journey but worth it in the end.

Thank you all for your advice and help, I've got some reading to do.

The results were form early morning tests.

TSH 3.24 range 0.34-5.60

FT4 7.80 range 7.50-21.10 it has also been 7.20 and 8.60

Ft3 5.30 range 3.80-6.68 but this has been3.6 and 4.0 in blood test range 3.5-6.5

Ferritin 219

Folate 6.5

B12 261

Vit d 86

I also have really sore eyes and feel old tired and spaced out a lot. I'm not taking any medication only ppi for reflux. I'm 53 apparently post menopausal don't get any classic hot flushes etc. Naturally slim but have put on weight in last year and feel cold more than I should. I have seen 2 Endocrinologists one private ( unfortunately I found out at my appointment that he works with the original NHS Endo and I feel he wasn't interested n looking at thyroid as she had said all fine) who decided it was chronic fatigue syndrome !!!

dont quote me but I was told my heartburn and reflux was from LACK of stomach acid and NOT to take anti acids, instead I have a squirt of fresh lemon in water and digestive enzymes with my main meal, it worked for me :)

The more knowledgeable people will know x

Your VItamin B12 is low too. You might benefit from supplementing.

There are a couple of types of NDT available from Thailand (via mainstream internet source). They are declared as food supplements for customs purposes. If it makes you feel better about self medicating you could just see is as that - a food supplement. In your position I would say it's definitely worth a try.

Please avoid supplements unless your GP prescribes them.

That's an interesting observation Vivante. I myself don't take any regular supplements, but I have read on this forum of many people who find supplementing, especially Vitamin D, B12 and iron (unless they are over the normal range), help them enormously. Is there any reason why you say this?
