Just wondering if I was right to stop taking my thyroid support supplement now I am taking levothyroxine. I have read that kelp itself will now be useless (but harmless) however there are also other good things in there such as selenium manganese , chromium and L-tyrosine.

I dispute that kelp is harmless. Too much iodine is bad - especially when you're hypo. As for the other things, I doubt there's enough of them to do any good. If you want selenium, take selenium, but a decent dose. :)

eannj, some kelp contains a lot of iodine which can be harmful. Too much iodine can induce autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's). 100mcg Levothyroxine contains 65% iodine by weight plus iodine is obtained from food so supplementing iodine in addition may take you over the maximimum RDA of 150mcg.

Thank you both for your response. I did wonder if I should have some iodine as I'm veggie and don't eat any seafood. I didn't realise that there is some in levo. I still have alot to learn!
