Doseage help please with T3 Tiromel tablets?

Hello - I have just received a supply that I have bought myself from abroad.

I am hypothyroid and currently take 125mg or 150mg of Thyroxine according to what my doctor tells me to do. The lower dose takes my TSH to about 2.5-3.5 and the higher dose takes it down to 0.1

My T3 when my TSH was 0.02 was 3.8 which is on the low side of normal. I would like to increase the T3 to see if my symptoms improve. My doctor wasn't able or wasn't happy to prescribe it for me, so I am going alone for the moment.

Please can someone help me with doseages and how much I should take, how much I should lower my Thyroxine (Levo) by at the same time? Also when do you know you are on the "optimum" amount?

Redhotchestnut, can't advise whether Levothyroxine should be reduced without knowing what your FT4 is. Can you ring the GP receptionist and ask for FT4 result and range?

My FT4 is 17.1 (9.00-19.00)

TSH is 0.02 (0.3-4.20)

FT3 is 3.8 (2.6-5.7)

I've had more tests done today, but have these for now from 24th August 2015.

Redhotchestnut, I would add a quarter tablet (6.25mcg) T3 to your existing Levothyroxine dose. They can be taken together. See how you tolerate T3 for a week or two, before increasing.

If you feel you need to increase T3 to 12.5mcg, reduce Levothyroxine by 25-37.50mcg. The second 6.25mcg dose can be taken 8-12 hours after the first, or at bedtime, you'll have to jiggle to see which best suits you.

Hold at 12.5mcg for 6-8 weeks and have a blood test, including FT3, before increasing further. TSH will be lower, FT4 will probably be lower as the T3 will also stimulate better conversion, and FT3 should remain within range.

T3 is not an instant fix, some people feel improvement quickly, but it can take a few weeks for others. Like Levothyroxine, T3 needs up to 6 weeks to metabolise.
