I am posting this on behalf of a friend Her husband .had upper arm amputation earlier this year He has the expected " phantom " pains " but also very bad nerve pains which I think are called Symptomatic Neuroma The consultant has said he could operate again but my friend's husband does not want to undergo more surgery . Apart from huge amounts of painkillers has anyone knowledge of this problem and any alternative treatment that has helped with this debilitating pain.?

I am sorry to hear of your friends husbands amputation. It must be a difficult time for them both as he comes to terms and learns how to manage.
We are a forum for "thyroid gland" problems but if you click on "My Communities" on the green strip at the stop of page, you will be able to browse the other communities.
I have just looked and there is "Pain Concern" and "Action On Pain" amongst many others. These will be able to offer better suited support.
One thing I did read was that if the patient is given pain relief before they are put to sleep, so they are conscious of the limb not hurting, it decreases the likely hood of phantom pain after. I once read a book 'tricks of the brain' that discussed ways to treat phantom pain.
Just googled it and I think the man who wrote the book is
Vilayanur S. Ramachandran. He is an expert in phantom pain, uses mirrors to convince the brain. Your friend's husband might want to look into his methods if he gets the other nerve problem sorted.
