I was on 140mcg Liothyronine and now been reduced to 40 but have 50mcg thyroxine. I feel shaky, hot and feel like I am going to be sick. Anybody else had their mess messed about with and felt like this?

Welcome to the forum Janeb71.

What were your thyroid results? Overmedication can cause you to feel hot, shaky and nauseous. When did you reduce dose?

I was put on Liothyronine and was always over but the doctors never knew what to do because my t4 levels were low. I went to see an endocrinologist and he was fuming as They had increased it so much that I wasn't producing t4. So yes I think I am overactive but never felt so panicky/anxious even when on higher dose.

If we only take T3 and no levothyroxine and our body isn't producing T4 it will be very low.

If taking T3 only which is the active hormone required by all of our billions of receptor cells and aren't producing T4 we will have a low result in any blood tests plus a high T3.

Jane, most endos will be concerned when FT3 is over range. He shouldn't have been surprised that FT4 was low, that's typical when on T3 only.

Were you originally put on Liothyronine because of problems with Levothyroxine?

Yeah I was on 475mcg and levels still not right. I have never felt so shitty in my life x

Janeb71, If you needed such a high dose of Levothyroxine it's not surprising you needed so much T3. Ask your GP to do thyroid bloods 6-8 weeks after endo reduced your dose. It's a significant reduction and he might have overdone it.

Hi janeb71

It does seem a very drastic reduction from 140mcg to 40mcg liothyronine.

How long have you been taking the higher dose. Did you leave around 24 hours between your dose of T3 and your blood test? As Clutter says, do you have a copy of your blood test results with the ranges and post them on a new question for comments.

Some people do need exorbitant amounts of liothyronine if they are thyroid hormone resistant.

If you didn't have the symptoms you state above when on 140mcg I think the drop of 100mcg T3 straight off could be the cause of your unpleasant symptoms.

I don't know if the following link might be helpful and this is an excerpt. Your T3 might have been reduced as your T3 would have been sky-high and your TSH too low but that is to be expected when taking T3 only. Pity many Endos/doctors don't have the experience in it's use:-

For someone taking 100 mcg of T3, we expect your pattern of lab results—a low TSH and high T3. However, your TSH and T3 levels are irrelevant to whether you're overstimulated or not. Two studies we just completed confirm other researchers findings: these tests are not reliable gauges of a patient's metabolic status. Many patients taking T3 have TSH and T3 levels like yours but still have severely low metabolic rates. Their metabolic rates become normal only when they increase their dosages further. Their metabolic rates become normal and they have no detectable overstimulation.

P.S. Dr Lowe (RIP) himself took 150mcg of T3 daily.
