I've just been diagnosed with B12 deficiency and I'm having shots for it. I thought my GP would keep investigating the cause, but he told me they don't do that. My test for Pernicious Anaemia came back negative and that's where he's leaving it. I didn't understand his explanation about why, and when I asked him how often Intrinsic Factor tests come back as a false negative, he said something about the surgery adhering to some standard or other about it, and basically didn't answer the question.
I feel very concerned about not knowing the cause; am I overreacting?

Reading this thread will give you some good information about B12 - from Polaris. her knowledge is excellent as she always supplies good links for learn more. Polaris is also on the PAS forum where many of us here are also. Maybe a good place for you too.
My Intrinsic Factor blood test apparently showed that I didn't have PA either, although I wasn't aware at the time that they are often negative anyway. I had a low B12 result, but there was zero interest in the cause of it - I was having classic symptoms of deficiency, but had to beg to get my B12 tested in the first place, and beg again for the PA test (it's in the family). My (old) GP just told me to "eat better" without actually asking about my diet ...
The end result is that my (nice) GP has put me on B12 injections permanently - I am not going to rock the boat by pushing for any reasons for the low B12 in case someone decides to stop the injections!
