Hi, All

i just wanted to ask for your opinions.

I been taking thyroid medicine after having my son 4 years ago 150mg.

i went to the doctors because i have a lump on my throat and thought it could of been my thyroid.

he checked it out and then said he doesn't think that it has anything to do with my thyroid and then said he doesn't think i should be on thyroid medicine and then said don't stop taking it lets see what your scan shows up and to take a blood test so was a bit confused so what does he think it is? i felt that he didn't mean to say it out loud.

Does he know where the thyroid gland is? First ask him for a full thyroid function test, which is TSH, T4, T3, Free T4 and Free T3. Leave 24 hours between your last dose of levo and the test which should be as early as possible. The Free T3 test is important as it is the active hormone needed for us to function (T4 should convert to sufficient but doesn't always or we are kept on too low a dose).

He should also refer you to an Endocrinologist to examine your thyroid gland.

They cannot willy nilly tell you to stop and thankfully he changed his mind.

If you were diagnosed and been taking levothyroxine for 4 years (it is quite common after a baby to develop hypothryoidism) maybe you've had a doctor who just makes a decision due to your TSH result by keeping it 'within range'. Some of us feel much better when it is very low or suppressed.

Welcome to the forum, R4RAA.

I'm not surprised you're confused :o

Have the blood test early in the morning before you take your Levothyroxine. Ask for a printout of the results with the lab ref ranges and post them in a new question and members will advise whether you are optimally medicated. I think you would have felt very unwell had you been taking 150mcg unnecessarily.

A thyroid scan will show whether the lump is due to a goitre or nodules and will show the general condition and size of your thyroid gland.
