Results of thyroid function test - can anyone interpret them for me?

My GP has referred me to the Endo clinic as a result of this test done in March. I'm due to be seen on 17th July.

Results as follows:

Thyroid function test (X77Wg) - ? Secondary hypothyroidism. Total T3 and Cortisol added by lab. Unusual thyroid profile - suggest seek advice from endocrinology.

Serum TSH level (XaELV) - below normal range - 0.13miu/L

[0.2. - 0.4] below low reference range.

Serum free T4 level (XaERr) - below normal range - 3.9 pmol/L

[10.0 - 20.0] below low reference range.

Serum T3 level (4424.) - 2.0 nmol/L

[0.9 - 2.5]

I have more or less the full list of hypo symptoms.

Any advice gladly received!

Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear that you don't feel well.

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) made by the Pituitary gland stimulates the thyroid gland into creating a hormone called thyroxine (T4) which stimulates the metabolism of almost every tissue in the body.

A low level of TSH and T4 might indicate hypothyroidism with a pituitary gland issue and that is why your doctor has referred you to a specialist.

These low levels could account for your symptoms which will hopefully improve when the endo decides the best course of treatment for you.

Welcome to the forum, MsMoneypolly.

You are hypothyroid. Low TSH with below range FT4 usually means secondary hypthyroidism (hypopituitarism) due to isolated TSH deficiency or other pituitary dysfunction. Treatment is life long Levothyroxine to replace low thyroid.

Your thyroid gland is probably healthy but can't produce hormone without TSH stimulus from the pituitary gland. Management is via endocrinology who will investigate the dysfunction which may also cause low sex and growth hormones.

Future blood tests should include FT4 and FT3 as TSH monitoring has no value in hypopituitarism patients.

Many thanks for the reply, Clutter. It's so helpful to have someone tell you what it is and how it could be treated - especially after struggling with these awful life-draining symptoms for so long.

I'll report back in here with the outcome of the Endo apt. in a couple of weeks. Hopefully it'll be a positive one!
