Constipation has come back

bobsmydog profile image

I was dead chuffed when my long standing constipation disappeared as soon as I started NDT but now its come back :-(

Could this be a vitamin/mineral deficiency rearing its ugly head now that rate of metabolism is being raised?

Any other theories would be most welcome, pretty please!

Vitamin C and Magnesium Citrate are both useful for "loosening things up". Are you taking either? If yes, how much per day?

No I'm not taking either but I do have some magnesium here, maybe I should give that a try, thank you!

I don't think all kinds of magnesium help with constipation. Magnesium oxide, for example, is unhelpful because the body only absorbs a tiny amount of it.

Someone who has thyroid problems really needs to be on Vitamin C as a permanent thing, because it apparently helps with T4 -> T3 conversion, and is also very good for the health of the adrenal glands. Depending on tolerance, I think 1mg - 3 mg per day is recommended.

It's magnesium citrate I have here - 200mg per tablet and it says to take 2 a day, does this sound good?

I began taking some Vit C a couple of weeks ago and a bad skin rash came back so stopped taking them but the rash might not have been anything to do with the Vit C, that was just a theory I had!

Yes, the dose sounds fine. Be aware that it also has the effect of making people sleepy. I always take my mag cit in the evening. Perhaps you could try just one in the evening for a few days to see how you react to it, then increase to 2.

Perhaps the rash from the vitamin C was caused by a filler in the tablets? If that is the case then you might want to try vitamin C in pure powdered form (ascorbic acid) which you just put into water. No fillers involved at all when taken that way!

There are other forms of vitamin C that can be found in pure powder form, known as the mineral ascorbates - sodium ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate and probably several others. I don't know much about them, apart from calcium ascorbate is best avoided because it gives you calcium as well as the vitamin C, and that is often not desirable. I know that several of these ascorbates can be bought quite cheaply on Amazon.

Before taking vitamin C in water, read this :

I use drinking straws then rinse my mouth out with plain water.

Maybe you are not yet optimal on your NDT? Constipation is a hypo symptom, so could it be that you just need to increase your dose?

Hi Harry, I've just had a blood test which showed showed T3 above range (and T4 towards top of range) so think I have been over-medicated if anything

Oh well, just a thought :-)

Then I would try the Vit C route too. Hope it helps x
