If you donT get the numbers somewhere near ok with meds, the docs will be keen to remove your thyroid. They do this either by operation or by giving you a drink of radio active iodine. neither way of removing the thyroid is particularly pleasant....
i think that by far the best option would be to take the meds and see if you can get it under control. if you can, sometimes it evens itself out and no further action is needed.
Whatever you do, think long and hard before agreeing to any treatment which would leave you permanently without a thyroid. Some people are fine with no thyroid, and many people rue the day it was removed.
I've been on carbimazole for nearly 5 years now, I've been absolutely fine apart from a small hiccup last year. I think people are afraid of the side affects but once you settle down on the drug and remember to take it, it's no problem. I have never had a day off sick or changed my lifestyle as you read daily on here when having RAI or thyroid removed.
I would advise you give it a try.
Are your eyes affected ?
Mine were badly, another reason I decided on the drugs.
Since it is autoimmune, i would think that food sensitivities and allergies could be the cause. I would look into alternative treatments that get to the cause, not treat the symptoms. But, that being said, if you are having dangerous heart symptoms, get on meds, then research the cause.
