Yes. Throw a packet of Levothyroxine at the patient and tell them everything will be fine. End of. Right, that's the NICE guidelines...

The TRUTH is that, once you don't have a thyroid, chances are that Levo might work for a time but at some point you will very likely become aware that you are not really right.

You need to be certain to keep a check on your vitamins and minerals - Iron, ferritin and folate, B12, D3. Keep a check for the symptoms of inadequate Thyroid replacement which are listed on the main TUK Website.

I have had a TT and was treated with levo only for 32 years and was all but wheelchair bound with chronic asthma, high cholesterol, hair loss, massive weight gain, puffiness all over my body, huge stomach. My GP told me that it was not connected in any way with my thyroid. WRONG!

I now take Liothyronine (T3) only and ALL those problems have gone. It has taken two years but what's two years compared to 32 years of suffering?

I was back to my normal self and My GP did not like it one bit.

Sadly a completely separate issue (a congenital heart condition) has meant recent open heart surgery but even there I have scored - my surgeon told me that my good T3 levels have enabled me to recover faster (Love him!) and that is despite it being really major - Aortic Valve replaced, Aortic Aneurism strengthened, and Aortic Root Repair - yet I am helping with meal preparation already, walking about 300 yards at a time, and although I have the backup of my family if I need them, I am making wonderful progress.

What I would say to ALL patients who have had thyroid surgery or ablation is - keep an eye on your thyroid levels, never accept 'normal' as a result - it's an opinion, not a result, what you need are actual figures and 'ranges' - and be prepared to fight your corner for your own health. You are in the right place to give you all the information

and help you need to do this.

I doubt it. I have hypo but others who have had a TT will comment soon.

It's all very well whipping out a thyroid gland (necessary if cancer) but they don't tell you the pros and cons and think that just prescribing thyroid hormones will do the trick and keep you well. It may work for many but not for everyone.
