Something in my throat

hi

I would be grateful for any advice. For 6 years I've had a feeling-on and off- of something stuck in my throat. I had an endoscopy which found nothing. My doctor said I was depressed and gave me anti - depressants despite the fact that I was so exhausted, was putting on weight and had lost my eyebrows. I'd had blood tests but the doctor failed to notice my thyroid was underactive. I only found out at a much later date when I revisited the doctor and said how bad I was still feeling and he rebooked at my results.

Can anyone tell me if and how I can get rid of the feeling in my throat? Is surgery on this?

Many thanks

Hi

When did you begin taking levothyroxine, which I assume your doctor prescribed for you? What dose are you taking?

If you've had blood tests recently can you get a copy and post results with the ranges for comments.

Hi Charliebear,

The lump in your throat could be your swollen thyroid caused by being under medicated or Hashimotos. Hashimotos Thyroiditis is an auto immune disease common in people with thyroid issues. Ask to be tested for antibodies TPOAb and TGAb. Also ask for your Vit B12, Vit D, Folate and Ferritin to be tested as people with thyroid problems can be deficient in these.

You will need to list all blood test results on here and advise if you are medicated and what dosage.

There are many very knowledgable people on here who will comment on your results.

Good luck.

Thank you so much. I am due for a blood test this week so I will do exactly as advised. At least I know it is not in my head as my doctor told me. He said I'd be dead by now if it was anything serious! Very helpful.

The last thing you need is surgery (unless you have a serious problem). Your thyroid is probably swollen because it is desperately trying to produce hormone and not succeeding very well. Once you are properly medicated it should improve.

Thanks so much for getting back to me. My gp. said it is nothing & I'd be dead by now if it was anything serious. I went back to see another doctor at the surgery and he said it was just part of having an underactive thyroid but to be honest it feelings so uncomfortable I don't want to put up with it forever. Thanks again.

I get a strange feeling in my throat too. It is intermittent though. I was reassured by someone on here who said it was just when your thyroid struggles to cope. Which it will until you're in the right dose c

Yep, I have had the same thing too. It all makes sense now. I had no idea that this was due to hypo.

Hi - although it may be thyroid related, I had such a feeling for a long time and eventually found out it was a silent form of acid reflux (common in those with hypo) - the acid come up without causing any pain, into your throat. I stopped eating or drinking for 3 hours before bed, raised the head of my bed a little (to stop acid being able to rise whilst laying down) and for 3 months took a dose of a wellknown anti acid liquid after each meal. It was a very scary sensation - I felt I was being strangled at times as the acid had damaged my throat. After about 3 months it calmed down and felt a lot better - but if I eat something that gives me reflux, or eat just before bed it comes back quickly. Please dont' diagnose yourself purely on this - but it may be worth looking into whilst you await a diagnosis.

I would advise changing your GP - it is not worth risking your health. Believe me, I know this from experience.

Many thanks. I don't know whether I reply individually or if you can all see this? Many thanks. I started taking levothyroxine about 5 years ago. About a year after my blood test in which my doctor failed to notice/ inform me. I will definitely follow advice and post my results of my new blood tests next week. Thanks again
