1 x 20,000 D3 per month for 2 months is 650iu daily.

I took 3-4000iu drops daily to get my levels up (took 3 months) then stop summer time.

Looking back at your posts - you note your calcium level was OK, but GP prescribed adcal (VitD with Calcium which isn't really necessary as Vit D will increase calcium absorption in the gut anyway). Best get regular tests for Vit D & calcium to monitor. Yes K2 directs where calcium goes (its also in brie) VitD works together with various vital minerals magnesium, VitA etc. (Epsom salt baths for the Mg, cod liver oil has Vit A & some vitD too). Mercola says c. 200mcg of K2.

It is suggested to take supplements 4 hours away from you levo.

Hope you're feeling better since supplementing. J :D

Thanks Sparerib, the Adcal D3 was prescribed by a Locum, my regular Dr said it was unnecessary as my renal profile came back with a reduction in Sodium, my Ramipril ( high Blood pressure med) was also stopped, that is why he put me on the 20,000 iu D3 - but its ok to take the D3 & K2 with my main meal ( and today happens to be haddock - Good Friday and all lol )

in reply to Spareribs

Hiya just realised you put 1 x 20,000 per month but I take 20,000 twice monthly - also the k2 I have is only 50 ug from Holland & Barrett :-(

What does it recommend on the label? I haven't seen anyone tested 'tho, but they always seem to test me for electrolytes - I think low sodium (salt) is not good J :D

in reply to Spareribs

If your referring to the " label " on my Hux D3 20,000 iu capsules take 2 per Month . the Renal tests where done because of the Ramipril I had been taking for 3 months as it can cause problems in this area - so it came back just as Satisfactory - Sodium was:- 130 mmol/L RANGE 133.00 - 146 mmol/L Hence Ramipril discontinued....

sorry I meant the K2. :)

Oh and the K2 dose on bottle is 50ug = 50 mcg have taken 100 mcg - do I take the K2 daily ?

Its always best to test before supplementing anything. I would be wary as Vit K promotes blood thickening (although I think that's K1) and not overdo it.

Unfortunately there aren't enough studies on vitamins and GPs don't seem to know either.

Yes, K1 thickens the blood. :)

What is the difference between vit D and vit D3?

The Vitamin D Council recommends taking vitamin D3 rather than vitamin D2. Vitamin D3 is the type of vitamin D your body produces in response to sun exposure, while vitamin D2 is not. In the United States, most over-the-counter vitamin D supplements are D3, but check to make sure. Vitamin D2 is sometimes prescribed by doctors because that is what pharmacies have available. If your doctor prescribes you D2, ask them if you can take vitamin D3 instead.

There is a very readable booklet about vitamin D - follow this link and the download link is there:

Many thanks!! A very helpful answer 😊

So, why do pharmacies have D2 available and not D3, when D3 is the best one to take? You'd think they'd ditch the D2 and stock up on D3, wouldn't you?

D2 is cheaper

I knew it! I Don't know why I bothered to ask the question! lol OK, thank you, SR. :)

Hubby bought a 'bargain' tub of Vit D - it was D2.

Whereas my drops were D3 (from sheep's wool) more expensive but worked! :)

lol Did he take the D2? I would have made him take it as he bought it! lol

He took a few then threw them away - probably mostly talc anyway!

Just nosing through the cupboard - he's now got solgar softgels (D3 from fish oil).

I'm sure that earlier this week I found a website that recommended the ratio of K2 to Vit D3, but I can'find it again now. Everything I've fuond today says that the optimal ratio is yet to be determined, but stressing the importance of adequate Vit K2 intake alongside Vit D, with the caveat of being cautious if you are on anticoagulants.

The Vitamin D council has this page: vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

This gives adequate daily levels as defined by the National Academy of Sciences (I have no idea who they are, but have made an assumption that the Vit D council know what they're talking about....). The page repeats the warning not to take Vitamin K supplements if you're taking blood-thinning medication.

I'm still new to all this and learning, and the interaction of all these vitamins are complex, so I'm wary of giving you advice. But what I will say is that everything I've read about Vitamin D stresses the importance of adequate Vitamin K2 supplements if you're not getting it through your diet (and it sounds as if most Western diets do not provide enough).

Hi aDoctor, Thank you for posting this interesting and helpful information. Would you think that eating a small piece of Brie a few times a week would give enough K2? Much nicer than another tablets.

I was just at my nurse practitioner today.. I had a bone scan done and since last year I've love 9% bone I my right hip. She told me to take D3 and K2 supplement to help with bone building. She told me that it's important to take these two supplements together.. I got a bottle that has a combination of both in a capsule. You can check the web such as WebMD to see what it says about taking at the same time.. if not in same capsule.. Or ask your doctor. Good luck
