I've always thought they were risky. Bought one when they first came out but didn't like anything that came out of it! Including water!!! Haven't had one for years.

I have to say I'm not convinced. The article says 'we don't know how they work', but scientists know exactly how they work! Just because it's a bit more complicated to understand than radiation or convection doesn't mean it's incomprehensible. As I understand it the principle is like hitting the resonant frequency of something with a sound - if you get the right note you can make something vibrate. A microwave makes water molecules vibrate, which is what they do when they are hot.

You can get a gadget to check whether your microwave is leaking round the door seal if you are worried. There are some on ebay.

No, I'm not worried about that! I Don't have one. lol My daughter had one, it exploded the other day, for no reason. I wouldn't have one if you paid me!

Years ago I shocked my family by returning a microwave I was given for Christmas and buying some really nice china instead. I instinctively felt that microwaves might be dodgy and as my kids were young and the technology was untested I didn't want to take the risk. The incident has now turned into a 'Mum' story but I've never regretted my decision, we still have the beautiful china I bought and I'm smiling. Thanks for the link. It might not be the most scientific link but who knows it might have something so I've posted it on to the others in my family. Mum might not be that daft after all. x

I've researched this issue at some length but am not convinced that microwaving food is dangerous.

Conventionally cooking food involves applying heat externally to the food. Heat is an energy that causes the atoms of the food to heat up because it changes their frequency, ie causes the to vibrate. Microwave energy does the same thing, but the energy is targeted at the inside of the food instead of the outside.

What's more worrying is that police are now equipped with a microwave 'weapon' that they can use on demonstrators etc to disperse them. It makes those it is targeted at feel uncomfortably hot inside so they have to move away. (I won't go into the Twin Towers theory)

Sorry, Don't know the Twin Towers theory. But that really is worrying! What an awful species we are! Always looking for different ways to hurt each other. Most of the time, I'm ashamed to be human.

Yes, we are in a small minority! And it can get complicated on some sites when buying stuff on-line. They insist they have to have a mobile number on some sites, so I have to use my daughter's number. She won't give up her mobile! You'd have to pry it out of her dead hand! And she has a microwave! Won't listen to me! What do I know. lol

Having regularly attended an annual radiation protection course in the past when I was working and I can honestly say that article is pure twaddle! Scientists don't know how it works?!!! I want to say I have never read such BS in all my life, but I sadly have!

The only time you need worry about a microwave is if the seals on it are dodgy, hence what several people have said about getting a monitor to check it once in a while.

You get way more radiation on a long haul flight, it is about the same amount as a full chest x-ray. I don't see anyone on this forum advising against going on a plane on holiday though, do you?

Well, yes, you're probably right, but who has a full chest x-ray and goes on a long haul flight every day? On the other hand, people use their microwaves more than once a day on average. But do feel free to say what you like! lol

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. You don't get a dose of radiation from a microwave. This is fear mongering.

I was just saying that you have more of an issue going on a flight once a year than going and using a microwave if you check its seals regularly.

I'm sorry grey if you found my post offensive but I couldn't sit here and watch people get worked up about something that just isn't true.

But I'm still not convinced that microwaves are inoffensive and I won't be using one any time soon.
