E -Petition - Are You Happy With This Response?

This e-petition has received the following response:

As this e-petition has received more than 10 000 signatures, the relevant Government department have provided the following response:

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health, including treatment for hypothyroidism. These applications are subject to peer review and judged in open competition, with awards being made on the basis of the importance of the topic to patients and health and care services, value for money and scientific quality.

The NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care South West Peninsula has partly supported a review of treatment for primary hypothyroidism published in 2012 in the journal Drug Design, Development and Therapy. The review considered approaches including triiodothyronine (liothyronine) therapy, triiodothyronine-levothyroxine combination therapy, and the use of natural desiccated thyroid.

We are asking for the DoH to fund further studies. Their response....!? They have pointed us to a review which says that further studies are needed!

In effect they are saying that they HAVE partly funded some research. So that is that!

If you are NOT happy with this response and you haven't already signed the petition please sign it and get 10 other people to sign it.

We still have 19 days!

We CAN make a difference.

  • The review mentioned was published back in 2011. In the vernacular of scientific advance - back in Dick's days! So much new knowledge has come to light since then that the position of this review is now utterly obsolete. The reply should have been based on current knowledge, which they clearly have not yet taken in as to its implications.

  • I do hope it isn't a case that in order to have their work published - they have to be compliant with the current trends of thought....

Not surprised at the response - disappointing ....

  • At least they didn't point us to the blessed Guidelines! :-)

  • It took Hillsborough and Stephen Lawrence over 25 yrs to wade through a mountain of crappy answers from those who should've known/done better... And they're still wading!

  • Not very happy with the response, although we have brought it to their attention. Even less happy that we only managed to raise 11,000 signatures over the course of a year, while an overnight petition about Jeremy Clarkson raised over 160,000.

  • Now at 250,000 For JC! HUMPH! :(

  • So I take that as a put it on the back-burner/twiddles thumbs/head in sand type of response.....delete as appropriate. Why am I surprised? *fume*. Oh well, we will just have to make that wheel squeak more loudly, eh?

What gets me is that the spotlight is firmly on the issues of obesity, Type-2 diabetes etc. when all these things are often interelated. That is why so many endo's are only really up to speed on things related to the pancreas and the thyroid, adrenals etc. get pushed into the background. Even looking at my local large hospital endo department, all the consultants specialise in diabetes with just one owning up to having a specialty knowledge of the thyroid.

So sad and so much suffering.

  • And they mention only primary hypo ... what about us secondary sufferers who just get totally ignored.

  • Angel of the north, I appear to have Secondary Hypo too. Welcome to the club.

  • Yeah, my TSH doesn't seem to move more than about 0.2 whatever my free T4 and T3 do. And I don't seem to make many other hormones well either.

  • My FT4, FT3 and TSH are usually all at the bottom of the ref range or below it.

  • We should get Clarkson to champion our cause!

  • Not exactly sure that he is the ideal spokesperson...! ;)

  • Tongue in cheek - he certainly gets some people's attention - not sure what it says for our countries future though ,

  • I agree! ;) x

  • not happy with the reply at all, can we reply/respond to this saying we are unhappy with the reply, we already knew about this outdated information that we were hoping to kick start again, the exact reason why the petition.

I read some where on this forum that either Dr Skinner or Dr John Lowe had said that the only way to make a difference was to pester your MP.

I suggest make an appointment at your MPs surgery and ask them to do some thing. I know a few people did but perhaps now is the time (while the iron is luke warm) for us all to give this a go ALL AT THE SAME TIME, may be pick one month to do it in.

  • Hi

There is no facility or process in place to respond to e-petitions.

Perhaps after we have final numbers would be a better time to approach the MPs.

  • Ok, so...

first attempt didn't even get a response.

    second attempt got a response.

    third attempt ??????

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

Start the third petition now (no need to wait for this one to end). Very carefully re-word it to something that is less of an easy cop out for 'them'.

We all knew this was never going to be a battle easily won :D

  • I know what you are saying, but we are feeling a little petitioned-out right now. :(

We are hoping to be able to use the results of this one for something, so hopefully it will not all be in vain anyway! ;)

  • Not happy at all with this response , though to be honest I didn't expect anything else .😱 Pp

  • No I am not happy with response either.

  • Louise and Lyn, the response sucks in terms of what I hoped for, but I'm not surprised, my expectations weren't high. It's grim, as Diogenes pointed out, that they're relying on obsolete research.

  • Disappointing .....to say the least ..

You both must be petitioned up to the eyeballs!! THANKYOU! Both for keeping at them on all of our behalfs!

Nothing ever is a waste of time ..the petition will be helpful else where I'm sure .. And there at least was a response !

Clear your petition brains ..re think, re group , and We will be waiting for the new March xx

  • Thanks Donna! :)

  • Have put out a face book plea to sign and share again Louise.

  • Ta! :) x

  • Louise, I wonder if next petition time (I'm sure there'll be another) we could PM HU/TUK members in batches to target ALL members, active or not? Maybe get volunteers to target A-B, C-D etc. usernames.

  • Hi Clutter

Unfortunately, this brilliant idea is not allowed by HU as it is considered to be SPAM. :(

We know this because we were doing exactly that, last time we ran the e-petition.

Unfortunately, a few people complained to HU and we were told to stop.

  • They don't make it easy do they? :x

  • Indeed! x
