Facial pain

Hi does anybody know if there is a link between underactive thyroid and facial nerve pain. I have been suffering for nearly 18 months now and I have seen neurosurgeons, neurologists, pain consultants etc. the only thing that is keeping me going is copius amounts of pain killers. I just wondered if anyone else suffers with this.

I do not suffer with the extreme pain you mention....well not in my face ! A year ago when you posted - Helvella suggested that B12 had helped him - either coincidentally or otherwise. Did you have your B12 tested - also test the Iron - Ferritin - Folate - VitD - whilst they are at it

Taking lots of painkillers is not good for your body or your liver. Have you researched TMJ - the name is too difficult to type/remember A friend of mine suffered and copious amounts of B12 sorted the problem.

Hi Cookie5...... When you are Hypo you are usually LOW in B12....

Trigeminal Neuralgia is simply one specific form of facial pain. I run from saying that your pain IS caused by low B12. But it is only right to point out that SOME people do seem to improve on B12 supplementation. Me included.

Please ask for a B12 test. If you can afford it, get a private Active B12 test (it is possible for it to be done on the NHS but might take some effort and luck). Don't supplement until after the blood draw for a B12 test - any B12 supplementation can throw the results and you'd have to stop again fro some time to have a second test.

Thanks for that Helvella, I appreciate your time. I have a blood test booked for Tuesday morning and I am going to ask for the b12 test. I will get a full print out of the results which I don't normally get and post on here.

Fingers crossed I can try and get to the bottom of this. I am getting desperate, trying to be a mum, wife and hold down a full time job with the amount of tablets I am taking.

It's been said to me that temperomandibular pain is part of the thyroid problem, that's in the jaw/temple area, my doc tried to blame gum chewing, but I've read somewhere that it is one of the symptoms of thyroid problems. I get frequent migraines and have finally persuaded my gp to refer me to a private specialist where I hope to get the bloods done that I've been asking for, good luck to you cookie5

Gum chewing! That's a good one! They'll come out with any old rubbish rather than admit that something might be thyroid.

The thing about thyroid is that the hormone is needed in every single cell in the body, so if there is not enough to go round, all sorts of things can go wrong. Anything and everything can be a thyroid symptom. And probably is! Doctors cannot say with any certitude that something is 'nothing to do with your thyroid' - well, they do, but they're wrong! For one thing, you cannot prove a negative.

For me definitely. I had extreme pain in my jaw for months after some dental work which was undertaken while I was on a dose of thyroid hormones which was too low. As soon as I increased my dose, the pain disappeared.

I was also sent to a neurologist while the pain was subsisting and I asked her if there was a connection to the thyroid and she laughed at me and made a sarcastic remark. But the disappearance of the pain just a few days after I raised my dose of Armour is just too much of a coincidence for me to believe there is no connection.

What are your T3 levels like? Mine were close to the bottom end of normal range.

Thanks for your reply, I do think my levels have dropped which is why I have asked for another blood test. I currently take 175 a day. Mine also started after dental work, I am takao asked the same question "was there a link to thyroid" they laughed at me too but I do wonder. It has obviously worked for you.

There is a link on facial pain & hypothyroid.. I have read this before & my work mate who is hypo too, has problems going to the dentist because of pain in her jaws.. Try google!

Yes I have face pain too and spent 7 years seeing consultants and getting nowhere. It's not as bad as it was but I still find it totally debilitating most days. I am sorry to hear you have it too. I have recently upped my B12 but not noticed a difference yet. I hadn't linked it with hypothyroid but they did both start at the same time. PM me if you want to chat any time. Lisa

Thanks for that Lisa, sometimes it's just good to know your not alone. It's horrrible, I have had an underactive throuid once I was 21 that's twenty years ago, this only started 18 months ago. I am just hoping it will go away as quick as it came x
