Hypothyroidism and taking glucosamine & chondroitin

Happy new year!

A friend of mine recently recommended I should try taking glucosamine & chondroitin capsules. I'm on 50mg levo daily but still suffer with the joint pains in bad weather. I know I need to go and get another blood test, my next app is due end if Jan. But as they had bought me them I figured I may give them a try in the mean time.

So I was wondering if they are ok to take? and if anyone else does too? From what little I have read online, seems to suggest it ok as long as not taken as same time as levo. But I'm not so sure.

Kindest new year wishes, sazzles x

HI I would first get the vit D and calcium tested. Calcium must always be in range, D can cause it to go over range. If calcium low , below range then you many need both.

Hi Sazzles, I've take glucosamine & chondroitin for joint problems. It's OK is you take it away from your hormone. However, I'm not sure how much good it did. Did the problems resolve due to glucosamine & chondroitin? Or did they resolve because I got my free levels up where they need to be? 50 mcg is still a very small dose. How long have you been on it?

Hugs and Happy New Year, Grey

I've been taking glucosamine, sometimes with chondroitin, for around 20 years mainly due to helping with aches due to my former hobby of lots of running. Fortunately with hypo I've never suffered with aches and pains so like to think that the glucosamine helps.

You need a decent quality one of a sufficient dose. Yes, keep it away from Thyroxine.

Thank you for your replies. I've been diagnosed 18mths now. And been back repeatedly about needing my dose increased but each time I'm just with in range. This site has been a great help and each time asked for print outs and had all the other tests with exception of free t3. Only one that was slightly odd was b12. 313 (300- approx 1000-cant remember of the top of my head) gp said I was within range. But I supplement myself. My last bloods was 4.63 & 16. Something. Again my memory is awful

Any way each time gp says I'm within range. But I know I need to go back and re-test. Feel like I'm constantly pestering especially with 2 small persons in tow lol xx
