A Hypothyroid Result for myself!

BlueHorizonMedicals profile image

Hi All,

One of the occupational hazards of running a private blood testing operation is that you end up full of holes from testing new blood drawing methods.

The other hazard is getting results like this...

Free T4 13.01 pmol/L

TSH H 4.26 IU/L

Paul. :-)

do you have the reference ranges ?

Now will you be popping along to your doctor or self medicating ? it will be interesting to know what your doctor says :-)

Paul, Lol, as the others said, where are the lab ref ranges? If that's the first hypo reading you've had it can be due to non-thyroidal illness ie you had a virus or a cold when you tested. Retest in 3 months to be sure :) Check your ferritin, vitD, B12 and folate too.

Active b12 would be a good idea if it is available to you - it is considered to be more accurate than serum B12. Any B12 testing is more accurate if you haven't been supplementing B12 already. If you could do iron as well it would be helpful.

Thank you everyone for the comments. Of course, ref ranges do differ from lab to lab depending on assay used..

The lab reference range for the FT4 of 13.01pmol/L was 12-22

The TSH range for the result of 4.26IU/L was 0.27 - 4.2

I'll follow it up with a raft of tests this week from TDL and keep you all posted - interestingly we are trialling a new lab, and have managed to get about 30 parameters from a single finger prick microtainer.

The looks I (and other half) get from the Doctor when we say we run a private blood testing practice.....

Another day, another hole in the arm.

Don't forget the Vitamin D!

(its OK for lab rats) and hope you're not anaemic taking all that blood!

Oh Wow! Are you testing the fab new system that super (and very good looking) young girlie from the States has pioneered? I am needle phobic, so it looks really really interesting to me! And the prices seem significantly lower, so that means we can afford more testing.

Its a great service, never mind the looks you get, we think you are fab!

Hi Ruthi,

No, unfortunately that system isn't over here yet. Don't let the needle bit fool you, the finger prick lancets can hurt!

The system we are trialling is similar to a microtainer, but is a little better in our opinion.

More later,

Paul. :-)

ps. really didnt notice how good looking she was. ;-)
