Has anyone had any experience with any alternative therapies to treat papillary thyroid cancer? Is surgery the only choice?

Teenarocks, I'm fairly certain that surgery is the only option unless it is a very small micropapillary cancer but you said this morning that FNA can't determine which type of cancer your niece has. If the tumour is under 2cm it might be worth your niece getting a second opinion on her pathology slides, scans and labs to see whether surgery is necessary now or can be delayed.

Thank you. The only option he gave us was a total thyroidectomy. I think a second opinion is a good idea.

Teenarocks, total thyroidectomy is usually recommended unless it is a micropapillary.

Thanks so much for this link. I get very confused about iodine. I have Hashimoto's and was told iodine is the worst thing I can take.

My nodules were less than 1cm on one thyroid and just over 1 on the other. It turned out the one nodule they said wasn't cancerous. Guess what - it was. Go for total thyroidectomy. Will save you another surgery later. That's what I did. Glad i did. Good luck

Thanks so much for replying. My niece has still not had the surgery. I don't know how long she will put it off.

I don't know how old your Neice is. But the surgery is very easy. Had mine done at 4:30 pm. Slept one night in hospital. They threw me out at 9:30 the following morning. The scar is no more than 2." After 1 1/2 years it is hardly noticeable. And i am 63

I am having PT this Friday and been told might have to have another op once they work out what my nodule is. I wish they would check whilst I am under anaesethic so I didn't have to have two ops.

Wishing your daughter well but TT is the treatment as far as I have ascertained after lots of reading.
