Gluten free and withdrawal symptoms
Hi just started gluten free 4 days ago and feeling really lethargic .
Has anyone experienced withdrawal symptoms when starting on a gluten free diet .
Yep, skin breaks out in me too, I see it as my body suddenly feeling relief from the onslaught and then because its not having a break its dumping all the rubbish into your bloodstream to be cleaned out... Like detox... Afterwards I always feel much better (yes I've fallen off the wagon many times over the years but this time it seems easy so I'm happy) you'll feel much better soon x

Gluten is addictive and works on the brain like opiates. Your body is fighting. Hang in there, Sandra. and it will be rewarding.

Actually no I felt better straight away. It was the improvement in my digestive system that I noticed but we are all different. 6 weeks in and I still miss bread, particularly ciabatta!

I have been using the newburn gluten free bread by warburtons Its yummy and stays fresh a lot longer and is only 70 cals a slice of thick try it Its lovely and I am a breadaholic lol

Are you making sure that you are still getting plenty of carbohydrates? This can be a mistake some people make when they first go gluten free, and your body will miss them. My personal favourites are the Newburn Bakehouse wraps that you can get in most supermarkets, GF porridge and Tescos own brand GF pasta (none of the others taste like real pasta). Try and stick with it. I'm sure you will start to feel better soon.

I'm eating plenty carbs , I found this gf bread mix which is quite nice and I make gf pancakes and I eat potatoes most days so I think I'm eating enough carbs .
Yes, potatoes are great. I rediscovered them when I went gluten free. What sort of pancakes are you making?
I found a recipe in the GLuten Free for Dummy's book , a lot of good recipes in there . Iv'e just bought the book so iv'e still a lot of recipes I want to try .
Like Churchie, I felt better quite quickly, particularly digestive issues. Of course in going gluten free you end up avoiding all the biscuits carbs etc and eating more healthily anyway which is a double bonus. I have found my mood is much improved since going gluten free (early days, just a month so far). Stick with it!
Thanks will do , I just wish family and friends will stop buying me cakes chocolate etc , lol I know they mean well but they just don't understand about gf .
Most chocolate is gluten free, or a gf diet might have quickly gone out the window for me. Sainsbury do some reasonably priced gf biscuits and cakes. (Most gf products are ridiculous prices and I avoid them). There's some good gf cookbooks in the library that might be worth a look too.
I'm trying to give up sugar ang dairy too , I have been looking for dark chocolate without sugar and without aspartame , can't find any .
That's a big step. Do you think you need some dietary advice as removing more than one large food group can leave you with a diet that's not properly balanced. When I cut down on fat a couple of years ago I found replaced it with too much sugar instead - not good.. It's all about balance, and it's a shock to the system if you make big changes quite suddenly.
Hi , it's only day 5 . I hope I can see it through . I want to try it for four weeks to see if there's any improvement in my symptoms . The reason I. Giving up dairy is to see if it will help with my post nasal drip and congestion , don't know if these symptoms are thyroid related , but so impatient to try just eliminating one food at a time ! Yes it isn't easy I know but I'm so sick of feeling lousy !

Its a good sign that you either have an allergy or at least an intolerance to gluten. It could also be that you are eating less sugar? That will make you feel more tired for a while but will improve after.
Yeah iv'e cut out sugar also but been using stevia
It takes a while for your body to respond positively to this change. But hang in there, it's worth it. I also went off of soy, dairy, caffeine, alcohol and greatly reduced sugar at the same time. It wasn't easy but six months later I'm feeling so much better!

I know , I'm trying to avoid soy also , you have to read labels on everything you buy !
