can anyone tell me how you know if you have a functional thyroid,or if it even works slightly,I was only told I had Hoffmans syndrome due to an under active thyroid

There are tests such as ones the see how much (radio-active) iodine is taken up by your thyroid, and scans such as ultrasound, which can give a good idea. But, in general, needing a full replacement dose of thyroid hormone is often taken as an indicator of having little thyroid function.

TSH110 75mcg-140mcg is considered replacement. >140mcg is considered suppressive.

They told me at Guys they cannot tell for sure but because mine had shrivelled away they thought it unlikely it made any at all. I had been very ill for a long time. After a severe bout of hyper I plunged into horrendous hypo and was finally given levothyroxine. I had gone completely mad by this juncture and thought I was going to freeze to death. Luckily I got the Levo just in the nick of time. I can't see how it could be functional. I was on 125/120mcg 5/2 days per week - felt under medicated. I take 1.25 grains NDT per day now so not on a massive dose. My sister is tiny but Is on175mcg Levo she had cancer in her thyroid, it still functioned perfectly but it had to be removed. My mother died of the same.

Hi TSH10,only part of my reply came up,nothing has ever really been explained to me only that I have Hoffmans syndrome which is very rare,I went to see DR Toft about 6 weeks ago and he said I was very unique,he had only met a few people with it,I take 100mcg of levo and 10 T3,still dont feel perfect but so much better than before,my main problem now is headaches which are chronic migraines,I so wish I could get rid of them.thyroid disease seems to be a massive problem in your family,glad you seem to be getting good treament for you now
