Taking pills on holiday

Hi all

I am due to go on holiday abroad very soon and wondered what is the best way to transport the pills?

Should I keep them in the original container? Is it best to put them in hand luggage or in suitcase?

Sandra, keep them in the original container and take them in your handluggage in case your suitcase gets lost.

Thanks Clutter - never had to do this before, how will they know that the stuff is legitimate (other than of course being in the original containers) do they require some evidence?

Sandra, the original containers will be evidence enough. I've never been challenged about prescription meds when I've travelled.

There shouldn't be a problem unless you take any controlled drugs? Otherwise, keep them in original containers, in hand luggage and as added precaution, I always take a copy of my repeat prescription. Clemmie

In some countries, u must be able to produce a script and u may not have more than 1 month's supply. Since i dont have one for ndt, i got my private gp to do me a letter that he has recommended the meds. I carry ndt, syringes and b12 and c amps. I put some in my hand luggage and some in the checked luggage with copies of the letter with both.

If you have more than enough for the holiday put some in the hand luggage and some in your suitcase. Take copies of the script, just in case you should be asked for it but also in case your tablets get lost or stolen. This is I admit a bit over the top, but it's what I do.

Thanks all - speaking to Dr P soon but not sure if he will write a letter (or perhaps I will have to pay)- I will see I guess.

Hi Sandra cc whenever I travel I always carry my meds in my hand luggage in the original bottle mine are just tablets and I have never been asked about them. For most airlines they state that medications are allowed in hand luggage if you google the airline you are traveling with they will be able to confirm if they are happy with this. Not sure about different country rules but if you are only going away for two weeks I can't see why you would need over a months supply. Have a good holiday. X

My sister (also hypo) regularly goes on holiday and as any sort of thyroxine is not described as a drug that can be 'abused' it should be ignored!! Take it in original container in hand luggage and it should be fine.

Thanks all - the general consensus is to keep it in the original container which makes sense. Not sure whether I will be able to get a script but it is reassuring to know that others have made the journey with no issues.
