My friend has a ft4 reading of 70.0 and a tsh of 10.7.

What do you think could be wrong? T3 wasn't checked. She has been on 100 of levo but that has been stopped until she sees an endo.

Ref range for t4 is 9.9 - 19.9 and tsh 0.4 - 4.0

Thanks in advance.

Stourie, your friend may have either resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) or TSHoma, a benign pituitary tumour.

I agree. But RTH is not likely to have suddenly appeared.

More information about her medical history might be helpful.

FT4 that high is in dangerous territory - she absolutely MUST go to A&E if her heart rate goes up, or she gets a temperature.

Both RTH and TSHoma are rare - it is vital that she sees someone who has some understanding of these issues. A typical GP or diabetes-focussed endo may not have much of a clue. This link might be worth printing and taking to an appointment or A&E:

Rod, I'm getting an error message for that link.

It was definitely OK when I posted - but that strongly suggests a problem with the hosting or website.

Nothing to be done for now except wait and try again. :-(

I did contact the site the other day as their search function was not working - got a fast response. Maybe they are sorting that?

Something else would have to be going on to explain high TSH when over medicated.

I wonder if the ft4 was meant to be 7.0? I recently got lab results of TSH 0.59 and T4 of 9.2. My TSH has never been that low. It is usually around 5 and since I still feel naff I'm convinced it must really have been 5.9. So maybe your friend should get retested before commencing any treatment based on these results, preferably elsewhere! I hope it's all sorted soon!

Maybe the lab wrote the T4 result down as the FT4 result by accident. How does your friend feel? I'm guessing she is undermedicated and the TSH reading is correct. If she feels hypo then I hope she gets an appointment quickly because she is going to feel much worse without the medication. On the other hand the GP was doing the right thing because if the FT4 really is that high she should be getting terrible hyper symptoms. A retest asap is the answer.

Total T4 is rarely done in NHS labs - so seems less likely. (Assuming was done under NHS.)

Thanks again for your feedback which has been most helpful and I will pass this information on to my friend who hopefully will be i n touch with the right people. I will let you know how she gets on . It's really all very scarey isn't it.
