please help which vitamins and what type Magnesium Citrate or chelated magnesium I want to buy some but confused

Magnesium citrate is better absorbed. Be sure to take zinc with magnesium as they are co-dependent minerals.

Usual tests we advise people to ask for are ferritin (iron), vitamin D, B12 and folate. We need these high in range so make sure to request a printout of your results and you can post them here for comment/advice.

My b12 results 507ng/L 187-883.00ng/L and ferritin 36ug/L. 16.00-204.00ug/L

Your B12 looks fine and if you eat meat shouldn't need supplementing. Mine was 700ish from 330 after supplementing but I maintain it with Jarrows sublingual lozenges 1,000mcg daily.

Your ferritin is very low and you should get an iron supplement like ferrous fumarate and take 2 or 3 times daily with 500mg-1000mg vitamin C to aid absorption and mitigate constipation caused by iron.

Has your vitamin D been tested? If you are dark skinned you will be in the 'at risk group' for deficiency.

I tried to ask for it to be tested today but the fact that my bp was high she was busy prescribing meds for that

Try getting some sunlight on your face and forearms for 30mins a day until you see the GP again.

Just to point out not to take iron supplements at the same time as thyroxine. Think you are supposed to wait about 4 hours after taking levo otherwise it affects absorption. I've been taking ferrus fumarate for 2 years and still cant get my ferritin level up above 40. I take it with vitamin C but it still doesnt help. I try to eat a lot of iron rich foods and that still doesnt help. If you have any advice on that i would really appreciate it! I am now trying betaine with pepsin when i eat to see if that helps absorption. If i could get my iron levels up it would make such a difference to my quality of life :(....

Zam_zo_zo, post a question asking for advice how to raise your levels. State your ferritin level and how much FF you've been taking. There are others with a similar problem who will be able to advise you.

Something somewhat interesting.... That might help you zo-zo,check out the iron/wormwood treatment... it may also be under iron/artecin... It may help if you took them together

Thats a terrible ferritin level - worse than mine at 40. You must be exhausted?! Ask your GP for liquid iron supplement on repeat prescription with your levo (if you take levo) - otherwise its expensive

hi according to my doctor my ferritin levels are fine but I feel like crap I have just started to take spatone liquid iron and yes it is expensive don't think my doc would give it to me seeing as they are saying its fine. as regards to your problem it could be absorption that's what I have read and that you may need to heal your stomach by going on a paleo diet

truth is you need a multi mineral... Zinc has to be in balance with copper and mag with calcium and yeah on and on and on.... so..... Multi mineral. I actually prefer magnesium oxide but I have heard arguments against it's efficacy.

Jake,

A multi vitamin won't always address specific deficiencies sufficiently but having addressed them will be a useful maintenance top up.

I bought mag oxide in error. Not dissatisfied with it but I'm told it is not as easy to absorb as citrate which cn be important for anyone with gut issues.

Hi clutter, I am not sure if we had a misfire in communication or not, but I typed multi-mineral, not multi-vitamin. Minerals really need to be balanced which I believe by your other earlier posts you are in agreement with. Also, on the multi-vitamin thing... check out Vitamin Code, it is an amazing bio-available vitamin based on the work of nobel prize winner Salazar or Salazaa... I forgot his name... just google it... It is awesome.

Hi, I have found out lots if info on minerals lately. They are most important more so than vitamins. As without minerals nothing gets absorbed properly.

The minerals you need are 60 for the body to be able to function every day. Also the ones that are readily available are metallic, they are not compatible with the body, you need plant minerals!

This year has been so enlightening for me I am gaining so much knowledge to help myself and I have now been on a training regime since end of Jan 2014 I have lost over a stone and I am getting back to how I used to be pre thyroid days, I now am much stronger, healthier and look so much younger. It can be achieved, if you are willing to put the effort in, the results for me are fantastic. I would say don,t give up, I felt ill and sluggish my muscles did not seem to work but now they are toned my bingo wings gone I now have biceps and triceps beautifully toned I am now a different person and I am happy!

Hi I hacve magnesium oxide on a script. nephrologist sahys the only one absorbed oK. However, magnesium a tiny range so you need a blood test for i and U`s and E`s, renal function before taking. Potassium must be middle of range. Both electrolytes and effect each other. I have to have weekly magnesium.potassium tests to be sure both stay in range.

Hi, I am no expert, but my kiniesiologist recommends the company FSC Magnesium 500mg each night. I have been very stressed by all of this whole thyroid condition etc…. and we all apparently need more magnesium than we know, for many body system actions. Obviously check it out with a health care provider i.e. Rikard Lanes or a kiniesiologist or a good health food shop. The general rule with magnesium is to take it at night as it calms us down and can make us sleepy. Also it can make bowels loose in morning , if you've taken too much. This doesn't happen to me on 500mg a night and I sleep pretty well on it. The FSC has Oxide and Citrate in it, also B6. I also take Solgar 50mg B Complex. We all need B Complex probably, but get advice. I know it's all very confusing. Some people can handle the 100mg of Vit B, maybe start on the 50mg a day in morning. I don't get on with too much zinc and the best way is ionic zinc by "Metabolics' online apparently.ie ; a liquid. However this maybe adds to a rash on my face and neck,(which I have most of the time on levothyroxine for under active thyroid), also as I eat pumpkin seeds perhaps I have enough zinc. It's best to get what we can from our diets but yes it is confusing. I've taken a B Complex for over 20 years and I wouldn't be without it.Also the magnesium. Our soil apparently is very lacking due to farming etc…All the best. Just seek good advice and I wish you good health!

I am on 125mg have been in this for six years or more, I might be able to reduce the dose but have to have blood tests to see first. They reduced it once in 2010 and10weeks later I was a zombie and could not function.

the endo reduced mine to 75mg and my blood pressure shot up and now I'm on bp tablets I've also started to add t3 as levo has never really worked for me I feel like some one has invaded my body

I am on a few tablets but I do need to get vit c and magnesium even though I have regular baths in Epsom salts I don't think that's enough. its expensive being healthy whether its through good food or supplements. thank to every one that relied

I saw a naturopath and she prescribed magnesium citramate. I have no idea how it differs from magnesium citrate though. From reading countless books it seems selenium is key - so i take that as a supplement - but be careful not to overdose on it (400mg max or you will get toxicity - i take 200mg). Fish oils are supposed to be important for inflammation - and so is tumeric - i take both. Its best you see a nutritionist - but be careful. It seems a lot of them say to take iodine supplements. You should read around that because iodine is not safe to take for Hashimoto's - its a misconception. I can recommend two really great books which will help - Hashimoto's Root Cause by Izabella Wentz and Hope for Hashimoto's by Dr Alexander Haskell. Both are available on amazon an will help you make an informed choice about supplementation. Message me if you have more questions. Zoe xxx

thanks zam-zo-zo ive got the root cause but because of levo and brain fog haven't been able to read it but I'm sure i'll get there I do need magnesium but going to have wait as feel to ill to work so lack of funds

Hey Emidjemal - well i just went down from 5 days to 3 days at work and then at the end of June i'm going to quit. I know how you feel - i feel too ill to work too. I've stopped worrying about money - my health is too important. I'm going to try find away to just live on what i have for two months and concentrate on trying to feel normal again. In Sept i'll look for another contract but there is no point if i dont feel well enough to work so i have to use these next two months carefully and try to be as stress free as poss, and sort out my health. I've discovered paleo and all its benefits and agree its maladasorption that is affecting my iron levels. I just havent found a way to correct it yet.

the worse thing about is that no one is bothered if you get better or not doctor/endos roll theirs eyes. over here its dangerous to use t3 0r ndt yet millions of people are using them all over the world and are doing really well how the hell can that be ive taken my health into my own hands and have started to self medicate

I know....i've grown to hate GPs and i saw an endo 2 weeks ago who couldnt have cared less - i told him i was going to quit my job and he didnt even look up at me when i said that. I cant understand the t3 thing either - or why the UK is so removed from latest research especially when so many people swear t3 makes such a difference. I am taking my health into my own hands too. Today i saw a private dentist to discuss removing all my amalgam fillings and he told me to ask my GP for a heavy metal test first to see if my mercury levels were high. If they are he said he would support me in having them removed. But i bet my GP refuses to give me the test... I have also enrolled to study naturopathic nutrition starting in Sept - so i have to be back at work by then so i can pay for it. I'm sorry you feel so unwell - its seems there are many of us being let down by the NHS and its a disgrace. xx

good luck with the naturopathic course that's a brilliant idea. I've given up so much because of this horrible disease but what hurts the most is that family and friends don't understand and think I'm using this as an excuse

I didn't know GP's could test for heavy metals. Would you mind posting about this once you have more information please?

I know many people canbe affected by nickel, mercury & aluminium for example!

Hi Mary - i dont know if GPs can test for heavy metal either - but i will find out. If not i may have to get it done privately (at vast expense no doubt). My dentist said it that he only saw one patient with Hashimoto's who tested positive for high mercury levels - and when he removed the fillings the patients TPO antibodies went down but not by much - but he felt better. I will definitely post about it when i get more info. x
