Why am I getting palpitations again and not sleeping? Going crazy with it!

I've had hyperthyroidism for nearly 6 years and taking 5mg of carbimazole every other day, this week I've started to get the symptoms I had when first diagnosed. Why has it suddenly changed? Last months blood test was normal.

Do you have Graves'? If so, a month is a long time in Graves', the antibodies can surge in response to stress - physical and mental - and your dose of carb seems quite low.

You have two options. If you have had some sort of illness or infection, or you have been under particular stress, you could wait a while to see if it starts to settle once the crisis is over. I used to get a sudden increase in symptoms at stressful times such as exams when I was at school, or a change of job when I was older.

Another possibility is that the carb is no longer controlling it as well, and although last month's blood test was 'normal' it may have been on the high side of normal and now it's high enough for you to feel the symptoms. If that is the case, and you can't really think of any particularly stressful events you have been experiencing, then go to your GP or phone your consultant and explain what's happening.

Whatever it is, don't wait any longer than a couple of weeks. Take your pulse first thing in the morning. If it is high, it's even more important to see someone.

Not sleeping is horrible because it can affect your mental wellbeing, I went through it for years and I do sympathise. Do take care and don't wait too long before seeking medical help.

Marie, you are a lifesaver!

I'm very stressed at work at the moment (doing a part time job that was a full time role). I just hadn't realised how much it could change my symptoms.

I have also have just started taking antibiotics for reoccurring Uti, so not mentally and physically at my peak!

Based on your excellent advice I shall call my Endo today and ask his opinion. I have some beta blockers in stock (albeit they are probably 5 years out of date) but don't really want to resort to them as I'm struggling with weight loss. I am guessing he may say to up my carbimazole dosage?

How did you solve your thyroid problem eventually?

Just read your amazing story Marie... You have really been through the mill and by the sounds of it are still suffering.

I am due to have my thyroid out in a few months, rather frightened but hope in the long term I will feel better.
