Thyroid test results.. Please help.

I have felt unwell for nearly 2months now. It started with palpitations and grew to include stomach aches (heartburn and indigestion), migraines, lethargy and other niggley aches and pains. I basically feel like I've been poisoned!

Anyway, my gp sent me for a general blood test and my thyroid results were: TSH - 0.79 and Free T4 - 18.2.

The form says that these results are within normal range but is there anyway they could still be causing problems? I want to have a more thorough thyroid test done but my gp has refused, do you think it would be worth pushing for one considering my levels are technically 'normal'?

Could you be low in Vitamin D (most people are), Vitamin B12 or iron/ferritin (or all three?). Your doctor is right that your thyroid looks OK (T4 of 18 is good - typical hypothyroid sufferers get TSH = 3 or more and T4 = 12 when they start getting symptoms. Your doctor needs to do some different tests to get to the root of the problem. I hope you start to feel better soon.

I felt too as though I was poisoned was using eutroxsig.Ceased it thanks to a chemist 12mths later thyroid levels ok.I am genetic b12 & Vit d deficient ,liver & gut inflammation, low cortisol.Mind you it took 6 mths to find diligent dr to get a diagnosis.Local drs told me it was stress, overworked as midwife. So persist until someone listens to you.

From what I've been reading is it not possible to have thyroid symptoms but for the blood test to come back normal? I wanted the doc to check my T3 and to check for vitamin deficiencies but he refused. I just don't understand how all these symptoms came about (literally like flipping a switch) they weren't gradual. I'm half hoping it is my thyroid because then I'd have something to treat. Do you really think it's unlikely to be thyroid issues?

Before I was diagnosed I was very ill.My GP at the time was great. He was certain it was thyroid and tested every 2 weeks initially. Always normal range ! By the time I got a positive test I was so sick I could not stand unassisted. I shook violently, could barely feed myself and was losing half a stone every 2 days. Within 3 weeks on Carb my bloods were normal and I was symptom free. Since then I have been symptomatic with normal blood. Had moved house, different doctor and have been left untreated ! Has been Hell. I ended up self medicating. Now on a diet and supplement regime which is working really well. I use carnitine for the arrhythmia etc and only take 5mg Carb if things kick off( usually every 6-8 weeks ) It's working, I am stable for the first time in years. My blood tests just did not pick up the problem !!

Thank you Linnet, your post is exactly the sort of thing I've been reading about. And this is why I want to push for a more thorough test. I'm sorry your current doc is being useless but it sounds like you have things well under control :)
