Sometimes I wish this site had a chat room...

Does anyone else feel the same.. though I'm sure it would be difficult to police which is a shame.

Hi

Please can you explain what a chat room would do that the main board and message facility do not allow you to do..?

I can approach HU about the possibility, but I will need to explain what it is that you want from it..

Does that make sense...!? :)

Chat rooms allow you to join a LIVE discussion about different topics instead of leaving messages and waiting to see if anyone might answer your question. Kind of like texting but you connect with a lot more people. Unfortunately, chat rooms that are intended for one thing usually get used for something else, by some.

I am still failing to see why the board cannot be used in this way... I am replying to you 5 mins after you posted, is this not a conversation..?

If you can help me to understand why this is not acceptable, I will be better able to explain to HU what you are after.. thanks..

Are they scared we might learn something?? Or make it kinda like Facebook... they already have all our info, just need a 'chat room' or 'private conversations'...

I'm not sure I understand this comment.. :( 'Are they scared we might learn something?? '

The messages ARE private conversations.. You can add more than one person to the conversation.

Hi

Yes, I'd love a chat room. I don't have the internet at home and have to come to the library to use the service so it would be great to be able to see what's going on in the chatroom and ask questions or exchanges thoughts without having to wait. I don't always know when I'll be at the library so a quick answer would be great! Thanks for the suggestion.

I think I would like a chat room too. I love this but would love a chat room as well.

I'd like a chat room too, but wouldn't some of us really lose out if we had one? As it is, if I'm at work all day, I can come home and check in the evening what's been discussed but with a live chat room it would all have 'gone' by then.

Would it not be open all the time and you could go to it any time day or night.

It is difficult enough to catch up with the postings of a day as it is. A chat room tends to reduce the signal to noise ratio - lots of extra words without actually adding much of meaning. Reading through the logs of chat rooms is exceedingly tedious even of the subject is immensely interesting.

Much of the time, people might be going to the chat room and find no-one able to help there at all.

As mentioned earlier, moderation is very difficult.

In this sort of forum, if there are people you don't get along with, you can quite possibly both manage to avoid each other. Chat rooms make that difficult.

Thank you, but I will run a million miles from any chat system.

I can see the pros and cons - when you "bump into" someone online it's really nice to have a live chat, but then again, you can't always immediately think of the right thing to say (especially on bad hypo days!) On balance, I think I'd probably use a chat room if there was one as well as giving my three 'aporth to more measured exchanges...going posh on you!

I think the main difference between this forum and a chat room is that in a chat room the conversation can move from one topic to another and go completely off topic and nobody minds. It becomes part of their social life. On this forum each thread is on a topic and if people hijack the thread or go off-topic it is considered (rightly) to be bad/rude/unhelpful.

I think it would be useful to be able to follow a topic more easily instead of having to search through. Or is it just me that loses posts. ??

Would a chat room need to use Flash?

Because I always check this site on my iPad and as we all (probably) know, Apple isn't allowed to use that technology.

A lot of chat rooms use Java ***shudder***. I would run a mile from anything like that (if I had the energy).

Don't know if you can keep a record of everything posted in a chat room... might not be helpful if trying to research something? Also I don't think I really understand the difference either. Surely it still depends on who is online at that time and is willing to reply? Messages on here can be pretty instant I have found...

May be a chat room (I've never used one, so may be way off track) would be more informal, like having coffee and talking about your day, rather than specific questions and information about the condition?
