I agree with the article's point that the precise coding may be important. In the UK,the term Hashimoto's seems to be avoided!
Also, it appears that in northern Europe, at least when discussing indigenous populations, there is a relatively high level of lymphocytic autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre. In the past this has been called Ord's, some doctors would nevertheless call it Hashimoto's, others would only go as far as calling it autoimmune thyroid disease. Not sure if the race classifications used in the study would separate out northern Europeans from others who are white skinned?

I found the paper interesting, but I was/am very irritated at the comment that hypo can cause 'mild' weight gain. I really wish writers of these papers would not underplay symptoms and effects. Hypo can cause uncontrollable weight gain and obesity brings some serious health issues. This is not 'mild'.
