I am currently taking T3 only 75mcg, the swelling on my feet is not budging would adding NDT be beneficial or even increasing T3 - I am currently not being monitored by a DR, Dr Skinner (RIP) was my Dr. If T3 only how much can i safely increase to?

Although I have a slow thryoid my knowledge on it is not great, just good enough for me, but do you have any other autoimmune conditions.. certainly you need to check out kidney and heart function with any form of fluid like that, just to rule them out. MaryF

You can increase T3 gradually and if you have overstimulation you just reduce. This is a link:-

I found that a number of sessions of Manual Lymphatic Drainage reduced swelling considerably.

I've had swelling like that with both high and low levels of thyroid hormones, so I feels (that for me anyway) it's a non- specific symptom.

Thankyou everybody, i will wait another week or so then increase my T3, i just thought that 75 was a really high dose anyway so was worried about the increase, would it be too much to increase to 100 do you think?

Hi I go to the European school of Osteopathy for treatments and was talking to my students Tutor the other week and he said you get 2 sorts of swelling in feet if pushing it leaves and indentation it is fluid if it doesn't move it is protein from an underacitve thyroid. never heard of it before and should have questioned him more as I don't understand how that works or what you can do about it.

Thankyou ednamary, that is really interesting, the swelling on the top of my get is soft but at the sides of my ankles i have really hard swellings that don't indent, they are really ugly and I'm very embarrassed about them. I thought they were fat, but i can't pinch it. I will have to look into it, do you think i should see an osteopath?

Hi, the swelling caused by an underactive thyroid is called non-pitting oedema. I have the same problem, at times I look like elephant woman. :-(

sazzyb have you found anything that works to get rid of it……? It is so ugly! It is not something that comes and goes, it is there permanently !

My 95 year-old mum has this and suffers from heart, liver and kidney problems. If I were you I would get this checked-out by the dr.

Hi jaxnbreeze, the Dr has looked at it and doesn't think its related to heart etc…..? Thinks I'm just overweight but its such a strange place to have excess weight also its not soft like fat is …..?

Hi dw, mine is always there lurking but sometimes it increases a lot. I've had it for 18 years now (it appeared when my hypothyroid symptoms revved up a gear ) but am really at a loss as to what to do about it. Frustrating. Doc said exercise more. :-D

Hi Sazzyb, you would think that adequate thyroid medication would sort it wouldn't you - just can't bare to show off my lower legs!

Hi dw, yes I would have thought thyroid meds would have aleviated it but it hasn't made any difference at all. I'm always to be found in jeans/trousers now if I go out which is frustrating. I found this earlier thread on non-pitting, I wonder if the original poster found a solution, I might go for a browse. healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

and Shaw's link to the late great Dr Lowe - re: swelling

sorry, all I can suggest is to ensure irons ferritin folate B12 & Vit D are optimal too. J :D

Thanks spareribs, just finished reading Dr Lowe and popped back to post the link. Great minds and all that. :-D Yes, good advice about irons ferritin folate B12 & Vit D. I've just found out that my ferritin is lacking and my folate is too low so hopefully that will get sorted soon.
