As early as next week, parliament could award health secretary Jeremy Hunt sweeping new powers to ride roughshod over local patients and doctors and close any hospital in England.

David Cameron and Nick Clegg have the power to scrap this mad plan - but so far, they've kept their distance. We need to associate this law with them asap if they're going to step in and act.

I just became one of thousands of people who've signed a petition asking Cameron and Clegg to drop this plan.

We do not need so many hospitals in our cities. There is a move in my area for routine procedures to be taken locally. Wonderful for us all. A few years ago we had to go to a hospital 20 miles away for a blood test. Then a small community hospital - 9 miles was built and they took over the responsibility. Now the GP surgery has taken over so no travelling.

The retiring NHS Director stated we did not need so many hospitals. The same advice was given to the last government and this is well documented at the Kings Fund I personally would rather see less large and expensive hospitals and more community options. In addition, in the last couple of years we have been setting up major trauma centres which takes away life threatening injuries, illnesses from local A&E departments. I am for that as my chances of survival are far greater. Where I live, if I have a heart attack, I am stabilized and transferrred some 50 miles North to a major unit. If I am in a car accident and have life threatening injuries, I go South some 60 miles for treatment. As far as I am aware it is only medical staff who love large hospitals. In my group, we love our community hospital and consultants from the major centres visit as required.
