Wow, my gp said it was too dear when it was £70. I get it online, costs about £40 for almost a year's supply. Doesn't bode well for the NHS that they are paying these kinds of prices.

Hi puncturedbicycle, I too would be grateful to know where you get your T3 online as my new endo is writing to my doctor requesting that I be given T3 in addition to my T4. I have heard that doctors are now refusing to prescribe it to new patients and I think this will happen in my case. I am willing to buy it but not at NHS prices!

I'd very much like to see some evidence for this.
As far as I know, the DoH negotiate a price with the supplier(s) and I really find it difficult to see why they would get the price increased if AMCO were perfectly happy with what they were charging. But as it is surrounding by commercial confidentiality, I have my doubts we will ever get to really know.

Yes I know helvella , I thought it strange when I phoned amdipharm and they says it wasn't them that put the prices up but if they are the only supplier of T3 in Britain I think they know that they can charge what they want , I think I will write to the health secretary to see if they can get an answer to this , Elaine xx

Not on the topic of the T3 increase,but a sideways comment on the costs paid by the NHS for medicines.
I'm hypopituitary too,and one hormone I lack is melatonin (makes you fall asleep properly) My Prof consultant in Sheffield happily prescribes it for me but I can't use his scrips -they're only redeemable at that specific hospital's pharmacy and they don't keep them in;only when a scrip is received will they order them. As it's a 70 mile round trip, I can't go every 2 weeks (Max he can prescribe from there) Neither can the hospital pharmacy post them on - they're not allowed. My GP can't prescribe it, as our PCT will only fund it for children. Consequently, I buy it online from the USA. My last lot, as I remember, cost me about 15p a day,for one tablet. I know,from asking,that UK pharmacies have to pay over £1 for each tablet. I wrote to our local health authority months ago asking why this is so but I've had no reply. Who is making this ginormous markup profit? Somebody must know. I'm lucky - I can afford to fund myself,especially with my multiple other medications free because of the thyroid. But...
How can I buy these from the States please. Also how do you know that you are hypopituitary as my melatonin is also low and I have never heard of this condition before - in spite of having had Cushings disease and surgery on my pituitary gland. I have to go to hospital next week for tests and I can ask my consultant to check this . Thank you Ging.
Two reasons I know I'm hypopituitary - one is that when I had pituitary surgery almost 40 years ago, my consultant warned me that I'd go that way as (or if, as they only gave me 6 months...!) I got older, and even more simply, my current endocrinologist describes as such in all her letters.
I buy my melatonin from eBay - just put it into Search. I now usually buy from a UK supplier, not the States. The problem with buying from the USA is that though the initial cost is slightly lower, when the package enters the UK they impose both import duties and a handling charge. This added £20+ to my last USA shipment, with the added inconvenience that you get a card saying that you have to go to your local Post Office depot to pick the parcel and pay the duty and handling. UK price as a ball-park figure is £9 for 60 caps or tabs, but they do come in different strengths. I take 5mg in the mid-evening and another 5 as I'm going to bed. The reassuring thing about experimenting with the dose to get it right is that it doesn't build up and do you any harm - it's readily broken down (like most hormones) and the only side-effect you might get if you do overdo it, is drowsiness when you don't want it! Good luck. Multi endocrine probs are pretty horrendous.

Have you tried pharmarama in Essex? I dont know about T3 but i got 100 armour tabs couriered to my door for £35. (Superdrug quoted £280 for same). You can scan and email the prescription, so it's all done online.

Can you just buy it over the counter in Spain?
Hi, I had to come off T3 last year because my prescription was quoted at £750 for 80mcg x 3 months!! The last one i had paid previous to that was £450 again astronomical!! I then had a prescription for Armour from Dr S,, this works quite well, i am now self medicating and adding a little T3 bought privately at a fraction of the price, needs must!
That is absolutely shocking. I'm so glad - just on principle! - that you found a reasonable alternative. It is crazy to make sick people pay through the nose for meds which are available so cheaply elsewhere.

Hi ruby red , I have seen it on here that people get it at different prices but it's usually between £60.00 and £70.00 , I usually paid £70.00 and then went to chemist the other day and they says it's up in price to £139.00 , I couldn't believe it , I actually thought they were maybe charging me for two months instead of one month but no , it was for 28 tablets , it's a disgrace , Elaine xx
