Confused about the different types of magnesium, and which one is the most easily absorbed. Can anyone help please?

Magnesium oxide is in lots of multivitamin pills, and it really is a waste of time. I read once that only 4% of it is absorbed.

The ones I've read about that are more easily absorbed are magnesium citrate (take it at night - it allegedly helps people to relax), and magnesium oil. The oil is applied to the skin and rubbed in, not swallowed. If you are magnesium deficient then the oil can cause slight itching or a prickly feeling, but it should wear off once deficiency reduces.

Magnesium oil can be made very cheaply - google it - or bought ready-made.

Totally agree.

I take magnesium citrate, 400mg twice a day.

You can also put Epsom salts in a bath and you will absorb the magnesium through the skin. Great for sore muscles or aches and pains. You can get it from some chemist shops.

Thanks Carolyn - a couple more questions. Why do you take so much? I read that the daily dose for women was 300mg. How much epsom salts do you use and how long do you have to stay in the bath?

Thanks

My magnesium supplement actually recommends that dose. I did read somewhere that that's how much I should be taking. It's a good idea to start on a smaller dose though for a couple of days. Everyone is different and that's the dose that seems to suit me :)

In not sure about the dosage for Epsom salt baths. I haven't had one for years. Perhaps I should start again.

I joined the magnesium group and asked what best to take as people on there take large doses of what I can only describe as a cocktail! I bought the oxide before a read it doesn't absorb much but I've continues in the absence of anything else but I am intending to get some citrate. I was also concerned about over dosing but am told too much -diarrhoea though to be cautious with that at first as it can just be your body getting used to it so with anything that could have this affect start small, alternate days may be to check if a problem why.

You're more likely to get diarrhoea with the oxide. It's caused by the unabsorbed magnesium so taking a more easily absorbed form should carry a lower risk. You are wise to start slowly though.

I would say 95% of the Western Population is low in Magnesium

Magnesium: A Mighty Mineral Indeed! Muscle contraction, glucose metabolism, electrical impulses of the heart, bone formation all rely on this mighty mineral to get the job done! If truth be told, the human body cannot function normally without magnesium.

Hi Multi vit and minerals, the best, are a good idea, any way, especially the minerals, compare them for the best.

I have to have magnesium oxide on a script, under renal and cardiac specialists. As I have that, the only one really absorbed, then I have to have weekly tests, just for the magnesium and U`s and E`s because it affects the Potassium, it must kidney bloods. This is because magnesium and potassium ( also calcium and sodium) are electrolytes and must always be in range. ,magnesium is a tiny range, so easily out.

I hope that helps.

Jackie

Thanks everyone for the very helpful replies. I think I know where to start now.

I would say a handful of Epsom salts in the bath if taken regularly. To combat a cold, my homeopath actually advised to put in a whole pound in a half-filled bath. I would find that rather a lot so do not tend to use that quantity. Epsom salts in the bath is also good against sore joints and muscles. I use the magnesium oil at bedtime, as I like not having to take yet another tablet/capsule.

I take liquid magnesium that comes in a glass phial - magnesium Pidolate - by Galenica. Must do some research ! Each phial contains 10ml and I take it in water.
