Thyroxin t4 to natural Thyroxin

Hello, is there anybody who has changed from NHS thyroxin and is now taking only natural Thyroxin. I was taking 100mCR of T4 and now trying to convert to Natural thyroxin, is there a straight conversion of the dose or is this a trail and error and blood tests.

Cheers

There's no such thing as Natural Thyroxin, so i'm guessing you're talking about desiccated thyroid? If so, no, there is not a 'straight conversion of the dose', because desiccated thyroid contains both T4 and T3 hormones. Whereas levothyroxine is just T4 hormone.

The desiccated thyroid manufacturers all suggest that 1 grain is equivalent to 100mcg levothyroxine. This is a very conservative conversion rate though, and most people find they need more.

It is fine to take both, if that is what suits you. Some people find that the ratio of T4 to T3 in desiccated thyroid isn't quite right for them and they need to top up with one or other of the hormones. i.e. some people take desiccated thyroid plus levothyroxine (T4), whereas some may take desiccated thyroid plus liothyronine (T3). And others are just fine with desiccated thyroid alone.

It is trial and error to see what works for you. And it takes time to find the right balance. Blood tests can be useful, but they should be considered in conjunction with how you feel.

Is it from the Nuri centre in this country if so I doubt it as thyroxin is a prescription only med.
