Going for results of biopsy tomorrow and having TT on Sunday - getting worried its bad news.

Hi I am new to this forum. I have been suffering with breathlessness, hoarseness and general malaise and apathy for over 12 months, went to GP about 8 months ago sent for chest x-ray - all clear. Saw ENT registrar in April who said symptoms were side effects after a chest infection and that I had formed a habit of breathing loudly !!! I was given 6 month follow up appt which occurred 2 weeks ago. Saw consultant at same clinic who arranged urgent MRI scan - had this , then biopsy at ultrasound. Now less than 2 weeks later have been listed to have TT on Sunday. Going back to see surgeon tomorrow for results of biopsy, pre op and vocal cord assessment. All this has happened so quickly and whilst I am glad that something is being done to help me, I am very worried that something nasty has been discovered. Any advice anyone can give me would be welcomed. My family are also worried as things seem to have moved so fast. I am pretty much keeping focussed but do worry about he dreaded C and the implications of living with it. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi Lynnie

Sorry you had no replies - hopefully someone with relevant knowledge will pick this up from Latest Activity....

Thank you Louise - Went back today for biopsies results - inconclusive - ? lymph node involvement. TT on Monday :(- TBH Ok with this as just being able to breath properly will be a bonus. Really suffering as thyroid is "encapsulating" trachea so looking forward to not breathing like an old lady!! 54, fit and healthy in all other respects so these past 12 months have been very worrying for me. Thank you for your support. I am feeling a lot more positive then yesterday !!! Thanks for your support

You'll have been for the results by now. I'm sorry no-one was able to provide you with any reassurance ahead of that. I hope it went well and that your fears were unfounded. Do let us know. Even when we're stumped on medical matters we're pretty good at virtual tea and sympathy. :O) And sometimes just having somewhere to let it all out can help.

I had a PT due to a 'dodgy' nodule, turned out to be benign thank goodness. I was told it was a 'time bomb' so in my mind it was better out than in - If you're having breathing difficulties then there's no choice really. I could have delayed my op and perhaps tried medication I suppose in hindsight, but glad I had the op.

I was in overnight and felt much better after, 2 weeks and back at work - but everyone is different, I was lucky, except then Hypo symptoms came to the fore - with a TT you will need full T-Hormone replacement for life - has your doc discussed this? (but I still have half a thyroid & as my TSH is within range I'm still untreated - 3 years later). If you want to know what to expect after the op, just ask - quite a few of us have gone through this (hugs) J :D

PS have someone bring you soup, I was offered toast - not good for a sore throat! x

Thank you spareribs. I am really into soup at present, due to swallowing probs. Have made myself some nice hearty ones and frozen them, so will take your advice on this one. Have heard some horror stories about getting levels correct. What should I expect and how should I feel after TT. Much love

Your doctor really should advise you - please insist! we are only fellow sufferers here. After a total TT you will not produce any hormone and you must be given a full replacement dose (many are on a combo of T4 and T3, and fare better than just T4 (storage hormone)). Some dose per weight - from memory T4 100mcg =7 stone (I wish!).

All I can give is my experience of my op & scar. OK Realistically, I could only sleep upright for a week, I just wanted to sleep loads, and so glad you like soup! My voice was very weak for a while too (much to hubby's delight) and still cannot sing, however my voice gradually became stronger. I put on 2 stone straight away (with no hormone replacement). Vaseline massaged gently into the scar to start then bio-oil helped mine (hardly noticeable now). but the scar is the least of your worries (and not meaning to worry you) it's the hormone replacement you have to sort, it takes a while to get the right dose, and it's not an easy 'just take this little pill' fix (as you can see from others' experiences here).

However saying that, many are well (and so are not on this forum). If you have Hypo symptoms already, they will probably get worse before better, but you must push for full replacement. Sorting vitamins and minerals will help too (check if these are low/deficient). Have a good read here and the main site - best wishes & hope it goes well on Monday - please keep us posted sweetie, Jane :D xx

So glad to hear the results were as good as that! Best of luck for Monday. I suspect I may have to liquidise that virtual Christmas cake, in the short term ... ;o)

2You may well feel very weak for quite a while and you need to top up with good multi vitamins and iron to ensure your ferritin level is high so that replacement thyroid meds are absorbed

you may well find that you will be much better on natural dessicated thyroid as it contains t1 t2 t3 t4 and cacitonin which is what a normal thyroid pushes out not just t4 as in levothyroxine or t3 which is what your cells need to function with

Hi I am due to have partial thyoidectomy some time next year I think. Could I ask where you are getting your op done. I am having mine performed in Cambridge.
