I took some Trimethorprim thinking I had water infection and had a bad reaction. I couldn't stop being sick and ended up in hospital on a drip to rehydrate me. Then I was told I had an overactive thyroid and put on Carbimazole 20mg a day.
I am utterly confused now. I has lost weight but that can happen with PD.
I came out of hospital after about three days with the weakness, breathlessness and told to see endo in 6 weeks.
Now wonder do I have Parkinsons too or are my tremors the thyroid. The weakness, the aches and pains. How long have I had Hyperthyroidism. It's all very confusing.
Anyone any ideas as no one can can say you definitely have PD its just the. Symptoms you present and with each person it's different.
As shaws says, the symptoms can be similar. If you have had hyperthyroidism for a while, this could result in muscle weakness as well as the tremors. It would be a good idea to keep an eye on your symptoms over the coming weeks to see if there is any improvement. I suppose there is a possibility that your symptoms might be down to your thyroid rather than Parkinson's but it could also be coincidence so please do keep your appointments with the specialist that is dealing with the Parkinson's until you know for definite.
I hope you start to see your symptoms improving soon. Although I don't have personal experience of hyperthyroidism, there are many on here who do and I'm sure they will be able to share their experiences with you.
It is very interesting to hear that you took Trimethoprim and had a bad reaction to it, then you were told that you had hyperthyroidism. I am convinced that when I took Trimethoprim for cystitis this time last year, that this was the trigger for my hyperthyroidism as my heart began racing and jumping, my hands were shaking and I was extremely anxious all the time. I visited a natural treatment doctor (who had previously been a GP for 30 years and had become disillusioned with all the bad side effects of the medication he was prescribing) who stated that Trimethoprim is renowned for causing hyperthyroidism in some people. I have never had such a bad reaction to medication before and am certain this caused my problem as the symptoms began with Trimethoprim, then I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid shortly afterwards. I tried a wheat/gluten/dairy/sugar free diet (which I am still on) which helped but ultimately had to take Carbimazole.
It is all very strange to me too. I feel a bit shell shocked still. From going into hospital as I was dehydrated, and spending three days there. To coming home with some new ailment, feeling occasionally breathless, worse tremors, including waking in the morning wondering if my heart is racing or my body is shaking, and feeling slightly panicky about the sensations I am feeling. Then why me, but then, why not me? I have reacted worse to this diagnosis than my Parkinsons diagnosis. I heard of others with Parkinsons grieving over their Illness, some calling it the black dog. I didn't but then I have a son with Huntingtons Disease, how could I feel worse over my illness.
This has affected me badly emotionally and I am reading everything about it. I have downloaded two books about Hyperthyroidism because understanding it is giving me some control over it. I always have to know what I am dealing with, maybe when I do the panic will subside.
