My new Endo

I saw my endo for the first time this week. Thought he was going be the answer to everything. yeah right. He is testing me for coeliac, says my symptoms may not all be related to my hypothryroidism. but Im gaining weight not wasting away. In two weeks I have gained an inch of fat around my waste (even though my bloods are normal) and I exercise twice every day. He said maybe Im eating too much. You think? He is taking my levothyroxin to 125. In 8 weeks, if that hasnt cured 'you' he said, then I will think about throwing in some t3. So no hurry then. I only feel like my mind is slipping away. Finding no joy in any activity. What is the point of living when I feel like this? You know what else? After I handed him the check list from this site to show him what symtoms I was still having he asked where I found it. I told him thryroid uk. He looked it up and then he said, 'That is not a site I would recommend to anyone' :( after that, I trusted nothing more that came out of his mouth. :( Sorry for the rant, I am at the end of my tether xx

Sounds just like the one I saw. I think they clone them at medical school. Hope you get T3 eventually as I feel sure it will help you. xx

Weight gain is a clinical symptom of hypothyroidism and Dr Toft's advice before being diagnosed or treated states:-

In the absence of symptoms some would simply recommend annual thyroid function tests until serum TSH is over 10mU/l or symptoms such as tiredness and weight gain develop. But a more pragmatic approach is to recognise that the thyroid failure is likely to become worse and try to nip things in the bud rather than risk loss to follow-up.

This is a link I posted previously re weight gain. I do not understand that those who prescribe are still unaware of this phenomenon. There have been several studies worldwide.

This is from an American site but substitute Thyroiduk.org who is enlightening us this side of the Atlantic.

Weight gain can also be due to a leaky gut, which is another side effect of coeliac desease. You dont necessarily loose weight with coeliac, you can just as easily gain weight. It can also cause brain fog and may other thyroid like symptoms.

Thank you Moggie, I didn't know that. I thought it was just weight loss or wasting rather. I will check out the link and better educate myself x

I'd give your endo a go before totally writing him off if I were you, even if it is only to get a load of blood tests done and a thorough check up.

My endo said the same as yours and so far I have had a bone scan, heart scan, adrenal tests, so many blood tests I cant count the amount and am now seeing a gastro for, amongst other things, a coeliac test - not a blood test but a gut biopsy. So if I were you I would go with the flow and see what comes out of the woodwork, it cant do any harm can it and if, at the end, nothing has come to light at least you'll know what nothings wrong.

By the way, my endo was right and is wasn't all down to my thryoid. I had low feritin, low iron, low vitd, high parathryoid levels and several other results out of kilter (which are now back where they should be) so, although it pains me to say it, my endo was right and it wasn't all down to my thyroid.

Hi Annoying but the T3 is the life line!Do make sure he has done all the either relevant tests. Phone his secretary and ask for a print out with the ranges ( hospitals do not automatically give them ),Also be sure he tested TSh, T4 and free T3..Unfortunately, it does take a long time and needs to be slow, to improve the thyroid enough.

If you think that you may have Caeliac disease and the test does not, then often you just need to try the special diet for 6 weeks and see.

In the end ,if not happy with Endo, then find a new one by careful research and then ask for a referral again. Not usually a problem second time around. However, good that at least, he believes in T3

Best wishes,

Jackie.
