Nasty feeling and wonder if anyone in the world gets this.

Hi , it just happened again , I do not know if its heart problem or something to do with hiatus hernia/related /acid or similar. As I have never had any heart problems I wouldn't know the symptoms. I kinda knew it was going to happen shortly as I started to feel pressure feeling just below my breasts and there it travels up to the chin and under. It radiates my back too and I get funny tingle in my throat. The pressure makes you to feel like arc your back like a cat to get the muscles to function again and I find i want to loose my shoulder blades... Its so damn difficult to try and explain this and I am terrified that it is a heart. I took my blood pressure just now and it was 133/87 and pulse was normal too .. I usually have very normal bloodpressure and it was slichtly high but I think it was because I was stressed of this. It has passed again and afterwards I had couple of good burps I do take Omeprazole and have had heart monitoring prior to thyroid op and that was ok. If I just knew it wasn't heart related I know I wouldn't think twice about it ever again.

although I am not medicaly qualified , I myself have a hiatious hernia and a duodeal ulcer that cannot be operated on and it seems that your problems may come from this area [ I suffer virtually the same type of symptoms ] I get and use 'gaviscon' on prescription [ 600mls ] and this does help ......but I would advise you to double check with your gp for all possibilities .......please request an emergency apt with your gp to clarify he/she has a duty of care with your total health ------ try not to worry to much it will only make ANY condition worse ....thoughts / <<hugs>>> are with you ....LoL alan

Doesn't really sound like heart, could be gallbladder. My friends son has just been diagnosed with Esophageal Spasm which has similar symptoms, best to get checked.

It sounds very much like gastro-oesophageal reflux. Babies with it often arch their backs and as you say burping relieves it, it does sound like this may be the cause of this discomfort. It is best to get it checked though, to be on the safe side.

If you are taking omeprazole, you should have regular checks for magnesium levels as it can cause low levels.

I hope you find the solution and feel better soon.

agree long term PPIs can cause magnesium deficiency.

I wondered why babies did the 'banana arch' thing. Meanwhile also calcium problems can cause spasm/arching, and rennies are basically chalk - could be anything really 'tho (shrug smiley as no actual knowledge except hubby has this) J x

Yes, definitely and vitamin b12 and Folate, possibly even iron!

My partner had worrying arrhythmia issues after 3.5 years on Omeprazole.

Remedied with supplementing those items - and best of all dumping the Omeprazole, it turned out to be LOW acid, not too much causing the reflux. Supplements with Betaine Hydrochoride now. (Research online, lots of info) it's a big leap of faith to INCREASE stomach acid, but lots of people have had results with this.

I was going to say it sounds a bit liked trapped wind or reflux (I have unfortunately been suffering with this myself). I do think you should go to the doctor to get it checked out, just to be 100% sure though xx

I get a similar feeling on occasions - the pain (and it is very painful) spreads around my chest and into my jaw. But - I gave up gluten containing foods about 8 weeks ago and I have not experienced the feeling since then. I also feel so so much better generally.

I have recently given up gluten after suffering rashes and the same physical symtoms that you have described, but also I have also suffered from reflux and gall bladder problems. I hope you feel better soon =)

Hi,

I occasionally suffer from oesophageal reflux and it can be an awful feeling. Even though I worked as a Cardiac Physiologist for many years I always think 'Is it Cardiac pain?' What I do is drink some cold water slowly and I can feel the sensation easing as the acid is washed back down my gullet. I also take Esomeprazole regularly as I am on strong anti inflammatories for arthritis. You could give it a try (if you haven't already) next time you have this feeling.

I agree, though, with the others, that if ever you suspect, or are worried that it is, Cardiac pain you should seek help as a matter of urgency. No GPs - straight to A&E.

Hope this helps xx.

Thanks foor your replies , very helpful and informative. I feel more relaxed about this now.

Many thanks

ThyroidHell. A bit of information that might be helpful. I have and am suffering from Reflux and take Nexium. A couple of weeks ago, minding my own business and having only eaten one piece of toast and a cup of tea six hours previously I got this awful feeling. Nasty pressure central chest sort of nauseating dull pain that went through to my back and sort of waves up like a burp coming. Because I have experienced this before I pretty much new what it was so didn't panic. If you burn your Oesophagus with hot food or drink you will experience that sort of pain especially after you have eaten something and the food reaches the burned bit. It also happens when the reflux is bad as this causes burns all or any of the way up, even up the back of your nose! Last exam they discovered a Hiatus Hernia and in the report it says "which will not require an operation". (That means that they, the NHS does not want to pay for it, I'm a Nurse, I know!

So, after this episode apparently caused by nothing I went back to my Gastroenterologist and said "I want it fixed", "I don't want any more waking up choking with acid in my throat and nose, I don't want anymore pills, any more burping, any more acid reflux and any more burning of my Oesophagus and my Larynx" (voice box). I also stated that I want my normal gut flora back so that my nutrition is not compromised, so that I can take my pain killers when necessary and so I can fight off horrid things that get into your stomach and are not killed off because you have such reduced Hydrochloric Acid. The Consultant said to me "an operation is not without risk", I said "do you think I want an operation"? " I don't want one, I need one, I am thinking of my future, I'm not getting any younger and I don't want this ongoing discomfort I have had enough" (few tears for effect). I am now being referred to the surgeon.

Alangardener, Just interested if you were told that your Hiatus Hernia "was not an operable option" or perhaps you have other problems preventing the op?

Hi Phoebs , I actually did burn my mouth with a hot soup last week and had an ulcer in my mouth as an result. I had tummy aches and when I was on anti-inflammatories few years ago they mixed my stomac for good. I have had a fair share of indigestion problems and have been taking 1 omeza per day ( I often ask if its safe to take these for years and Dr. said yes) I had the hiatus hernia investigated few years ago and that was that ..nothing was offered. I have had this spasm in my chest/stomach for about 5 years now and lately I get it twice a month . I went to doctors about it couple of years ago thinking it was my hears and was sent to monitor but that was thank god normal , since then I have had it 2 more times as I had hernia op and spine op oh and Total thyrectomy in june. I can actually predict when the spasm attack starts and dreading it to reach its peak the sensation in my throat is like I have a fizzy drink in my blood veins in the neck..its so damn hard to try and explain. When it comes I have taken my blood pressure and its normal ( sure if I was haveing a heart attack it would be nothing than normal ? ) and pulse seems normal too although its a bit raised due to a stressful situation. I don't often get the acid fluid in my mouth but I have noticed I get episodes of it and then it calms down again. I 1st went to doctors because I always felt unwell just after dinner/meal and after palpating my tummy the dr. said its full of peptic acid and basically been to Omepazarols ever since ... Yeah so I recon I need to sort this out and rule out my hart really. Thanks for the reply

Just for info; do you know the connection between HH and HT?

'The results show that one of the early signs of HT is HH and gastroesophageal reflux disease.'

I never knew this ... mind boggles and I have never been on any medication for thyroid before 24/6/2013 . I had TT due to multi nodular thyroid glands and as they occasionally over the years prior to this took thyroid readings from blood , they were 'normal' even though I had right removed 30 years ago :o(

I have had acid reflux for many many years, before I was ever overweight, when I was young and fit and before I became Hypothyroid so maybe there is a connection. There is a specialist in a London hospital (either The London Hospital or Guys) that you can be referred to to have your acid levels measured, it's the only place in the UK that does it.

I was always picking up kids stuff from the floor and bending over kept giving me a burning feeling but as we do I brushed it aside and made piles on the floor instead. I had been having awful painful joints and muscles and paid to see a rheumatologist who just said I wasn't bad enough and come back when it is. I continued the pains which stopped me doing so much with the kids. I had been really tired and stressed and complaining of all the thyroid symptoms for years but finally tested and given 50mcg levo in November 2013. In Jan 2014 I was laid up in bed feeling very weak and reaching up bile for two days. Two days later I had a slight heart attack after lifting heavy shopping during the day and then late eve I lifted a heavy bag again and at the same time got a bad pain in my chest. I drove home thinking I had pulled a muscle but the pain went into my upper back and shoulders and by the time I got home I was feeling breathless. I was diagnosed with an NSTEMI slight heart attack, the angiogram came back clear and I was put on Clopidogrel and aspirin. A couple of months later I had my levo reduced to 25mcg. I went to a nutritionist who said I was low on zinc and magnesium which could have caused a spasm. The hospital said I was borderline magnesium deficiency but they didn't give me any. Since then I have had awful explosive belches, an ache between the shoulder blades which goes when I straighten up. I sometimes get a chest ache when I have been sitting at my desk for some time and also sitting low watching tv. I am tall and do slouch, it feels I am being pulled forward. Then looking up symptoms I came across hiatus hernia and it all seemed to fall in place. I do feel uncomfortable leaning forward and I try not to pick anything up anymore. I ended up in a&e the other day after I had a huge baked potato and felt a pain and then my anxiety kicks in and back pain started. Anytime this happens my automatic reaction is to think heart and the adrenalin kicks in before I have time to think about it. I have been trying to avoid gluten and sugar now and take supplements but haven't had ferritin checked or vitamins. My echocardiogram and MRI came back good. But I don't trust the medical profession anymore and have doubts about everything now. I get bouts when I am a bit breathless, get a tightness in the diaphragm area. I went to my osteopath/physio after the trip to a&e and he said I wasn't using my left lung properly and gave me stretching exercises which has definately helped the breathlessness. I don't take anything for reflux as it didn't occur to me this could be the problem. I was mineral deficient and have very weak muscles especially in the arms. I used to be in the TA and was so fit and strong, I am another person now and only 57. With all the joint pains it was an effort to walk or stand for periods so my active days came to an end. I must say that my joints and muscle pain have greatly improved and I can walk for an hour now with no pain in my hips but noticing some muscle pain around the top of my knee. My friends are fed up with my ailments and I have been cancelling social events due to anxiety about the heart and I can't take stress anymore. What a life eh? But know I have to get myself better as just 10 minutes with different doctors each time is hopeless. It takes them 10 minutes to look at my notes. This might ring a bell with someone, no heart attack has been recorded ever in my family or heart issues. My cholesterol is 3.7 and before the heart attack my weight was gradually creeping up despite not eating much but my doctors kept telling me I needed to lose weight because of my joints! We need to start an alternative NHS!
