If Levothyroxine isnt working, how do I know if I would do better on Armour

I am taking 75mcg Levothyroxine, and feel awful, aches & pains as if I had a virus, but I think I know my body by now. I doubt if my GP would even listen to me asking for Armour, so how do I go about at least trying it. I live in Norfolk any suggestions/ideas please ......

  • Thank you for posting this! I have the exact same problem. I'm 17 and am on the same dose of levothyroxine (have been for about a year) . I live in London and I know this message isn't very useful because I have no advice but hopefully someone else will!

  • Simple answer is you don't know till you try, nobody can predict anything. Armour is not for everyone, some don't get on with it at all. Have you had tests for other things that may be causing you probs, B12, Vit D and a few others which can give you the same symptoms if low or deficient.

  • Hi Quite likely you also need Y3 on a script, too, the only way to know is by a Free T3 test, you need this for armour too, WEB if GP unable to do it. The ideal is Levo and T3 on a script, depending on bloods. FT3 often needs to be near top of range. Armour, also would need the tests, unlikely the GP would prescribe it and expensive. The best way is to ask the GP to prescribe T4 ( levo) and T3 on good reliable blood test Re tests after a month or so on T3.

    Best wishes,

  • Some doctors will treat the way you feel by increasing your dose by 25 mcg at a time rather than adjust your doage according to your blood test results. It may be worth talking to your doctor about this. 75 mcg is quite a low dose, I've been on 175 mcg for about 5 years and still feel tired all the time and lack concentration despite my TSH being borderline on the last three blood tests. My doctor told me that the dose can go as high as 300 mcg. I'm sure there is light at the end of the tunnel and we will get there if we keep pestering the doctor and telling him/her that something still isn't right. Good luck.
