Has anyone experienced mood swings and emotional changes when first starting their treatment? I don't know what I am feeling half the time.

I had all of this for sometime before being diagnosed and starting treatment for Hypothyroidism,it was quite scary as i had a whole change of personality but i did start to feel a lot better and very soon after starting.

I started treatment about 4 weeks ago and within a week to 10 days I had terrible mood swings

tried taking meds after visits to my family instead of before and because I could not argue with

myself things are a lot better how long it will last I do not know but seeing specialist again this

month also been told I have gallstones too Way to go .

thank you for sharing. I was in the grocery shoppe today and started looking at ingredients of some foods. I saw soya in everything. all of a sudden I just burst into tears. I seem to be very emotional now and crying over every little thing. They say it is underlying anxiety that is coming through now that my energy is a bit more increased and I am noticing it more. I just don't know...I kind of liked being sedated and emotionless from my hypo. That I kind of miss.

Men and women may differ more on this due to hormone interactions being different- but in my dealing with low thyoid/energy/temp etc. I have never felt more prone to feeling emotional or weepy. These feelings I associate with depression from past contact- but no reason why two conditions can't run together.

I don't think docs show much imagination when they confuse the two states, though.

Yes I realize there are other factors and life situations that just add to the whole ball of wax. Thanks. I know hypo people do tend to get depression.

Are you hypo or hyper?

WILSON12 profile image
WILSON12 in reply to marymerry83

I am hyper and doc says my thyroid is likely to go back to

normal when I do not know Going to review my meds at

next clinic visit in 2 weeks.Hope they dont give me a higher dose as I am off to Grand Canary at the end of this month dont want to go loopy when I am away .lol

I know...lol Going loopy is the last thing you need. You could wait to start the new dose when you get back I suppose. I thought our thyroids never go back to normal and we always have to take meds from now on. What type of thyroid issue do you have and what is your dose of levo now?

WILSON12 profile image

I have over active thyroid (hyper) and as I said doc says

that over time it should go back to normal dont think mine

is really bad I am only on Carbimazole at the moment

Oh, do you have graves disease? Do they know what the cause is?

WILSON12 profile image
WILSON12 in reply to marymerry83

Yes I do have Graves disease it is the most common

cause of overactive thyroid .Lots of different things can

cause it I looked on internet but it could be any amount of

reasons for it I am none the wiser but going to see if I can

get more info from specialist when I see her later this month

If im to believe my husband then yes but i must admit the bad brainfog i experienced at the time made me forget a lot of what happened in that first year of thyroid meds and it was only 2010!

marymerry83 profile image
marymerry83 in reply to Duchy82

Hmmmm, it did not get better for a year. Were you changing doses alot?

I got worse first before it all got better i got diagnosed in the april and by june i was in hospital with fibriomialgia type headaches that were only solved with a cocktail of painkillers and amytriptiline i now believe they were because of being hypo as my dose of levo increased those headaches reduced and i dont need to take the amyltriptiline any more. It took 2 years to get back to normal again including the moodswings and emotional changes and to be honest only until recently that i recognised how different i was at that time. Saying that the docs started at the time at 25mcg slowly building up i now take around 200mcg im in charge of my own dosing with the docs permission. There is far more to that story but already wrote a book here so maybe i should write a post of my story hope it helps though.

I think it depends on how long you have been ill as to how quickly you will recover. If caught early the chances are, recovery will be quicker as prolonged illness impacts on a lot of other things which need to be put right and then you are in for the long haul back to health.

that is absolutely true, i have been monitored for hypo as a child as i had a goitre from a very early age noticed by the school doctor so i believe my thyroid has been struggling from then, it took until 2010 to show up in the blood test when i went to the docs with some classic symptoms. It did help though that i recognised them for what they were as my grandma was hypo, it still took me ages to pluck up the courage to go to the docs as i was worried that i wouldn't be taken seriously which was unjustified completely but i suppose thinking back now that seemed so silly as i never had problems with going to the docs before and was always taken seriously but hypo plays tricks with your mind.

So, you had other issues like a goiter as well! I think part of my anxiety is wondering how I am going to feel one day to the next. It is scary.

in reply to marymerry83

Scary and very annoying, it ruins your social life as well, could never say whether I would be well enough on the day to go out with friends, attend social events etc. Very irritating and a puzzle to everyone else.

I'm reassured to read your reply as I also find it hard to make plans as I don't know how i will feel on the day; or often completely lack the drive to even consider making plans.

marymerry83 profile image

That's the hard part. This condition seems to be non-lienar in which you don't know how you will feel one day to the next. Apparently when we are more stabilized this too should pass and we should have some normality and stability back in our lives as well.

I found Levo a bigger mood sucker than being UAT, for sure! Still looking to get T4 dose boost and check how that goes...

marymerry83 profile image
marymerry83 in reply to tegz

I tend to agree with you. If you get boosted up though, won't that increase mood? So many people that take it say they don't feel any change unless it is too much. So You start to think what the hell is wrong with you... I just feel different since starting levo. Some ways are good but the emotional level is off the charts..

Yes I think so too. Also if you are under stress from other factors, this probably plays a part in it as well.
