My blood results TSH 0.04 and Free T4 is 83, i am going on a long haul holiday in about 6 weeks, my consultant says he will not be able to tell me if i can fly until next blood results, I don't understand as i am on medication now, can anyone shed some light on this? Thank you

Hmmm- that's a tricky one for you. I assume you hsve veen prescribed carbimazole? This link explains how it works and how long it takes to reduce the thyroid hormone levels:

Perhaps you can be retested in three weeks to see if that T4 level had reduced.

If you have lots of symptoms such as anxiety, sweating, fast pulse or high blood pressure perhaps he has prescribed beta blockers like propranolol to relieve these symptoms.

You will need to notify travel insurance company as not declaring a known pre-existing condition could make your insurance null and void if you have to make a claim. You might need to produce a medical certificate to state you are fit to travel.

I do hope it works out well for you and the meds kick in quickly to reduce these levels so you can have a great holiday. Let us know how you get on.

I started off at TSH 0.03 and 39 for T4 but with antibodies and I felt really awful. After I was put on carb then block and replaced I read somewhere that if I had hadn't car accident I could have died - can't find where I read it though - think it. Might have been talking about thyroid storm and any information I can find on that only refers to 'untreated' hyperactive thyroid, as you are being treated maybe it just means your endo doesn't want you to fly until you are more stable.

We have just renewed out annual travel insurance and after much reminding of my husband to be sure he tells them about my Graves ( kept saying 'our insurance will be void if you don't' ) it would appear that Graves isn't a problem whereas my high blood pressure is, must say I was a bit surprised at that.

Hope all your readings come down quickly and you get away when you want to.

Liz

Hi Nikka, I was in a similar position to you when I first got diagnosed hyper in may. I had a holiday booked for first week in June and was very apprehensive about going as I felt so rotten and had just started meds. I went to my Gp who said I would be fine as it was to be a relaxing holiday, so off I went. I do remember her saying if it had been a long haul flight that would've been different and she wouldn't have recommended it. I'm not sure of the reason why, sorry. X

I'm a stewardess, recently diagnosed hyper and I flew to Orlando working, my gp had no problems about me operating the long-haul flight or any other flights. I'm sure you will be fine to go.

You should be ok as long as you take your meds with you.I went on a med cruise very soon after i was diagnosed with Graves (hyperthyroid)...We went on a plane before boarding the ship.I'm sure there shouldnt be a problem...I was on beta blockers too for a very rapid heartbeat...Hope all goes well and enjoy your holiday.
