Hi everyone Does anyone know how on earth to ge... - Thyroid UK
Hi everyone Does anyone know how on earth to get referral to Mr S? It's impossible?!
Did you ask your GP and he refused? Give your GP a copy of this page and tell him although Dr S is a Virologist he was asked by Specialists etc etc - "I want a referral letter please":-
I asked two GP's for a referral. The first said no, he is a virologist why would you want to see him and the second initially said yes but then found he was being investigated by the GMC or something. Thanks for world thyroid register info. thats great but what did you mean "he was asked by specialists etc etc"?
Dr S, Dr Peatfield and others were trained as students in the 1960's and learned to diagnose by clinical symptoms of thyroid gland problems. There were no blood tests at that period as people were diagnosed according to clinical symptoms and given dessicated thyroid hormones (all that was available at that time).
When the 'exquisite' blood tests were brought in (about the 1970's) and doctors had been told that only the TSH could confirm whether or not patients had a thyroid gland disease.About ten years' later when complaints of ill-health were mounting so many Specialists (I assume whom the patients were referred to by the GP's) couldn't figure it out either - so it was thought 'it must be a virus'. I remember something being called 'yuppie flu'. So a Virologist was asked to see these patients with 'mystery complaints' i.e. Step forward Dr S who could see many were thyroid gland problems 'and not 'viral' and treated them.
Another doctor - Dr Derry in Canada - was having similar enquiries as Dr S:-
Dr. David Derry of Canada was practicing medicine when the TSH lab was introduced, and he made the profound observation:
“The consensus of thyroidologists decided in 1973 that the TSH (lab) was the blood test they had been looking for all through the years. This was about two years after I started practice. Having been taught how to diagnose hypothyroid conditions clinically, I was in a position to watch to see what the relation of the TSH was to the onset of hypothyroidism. What I found was many people would develop classic signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism but the TSH was ever so slow to become abnormal, rise and confirm the clinical diagnosis. Sometimes it never did. Finally I began treating patients with hypothyroid in the normal manner I was taught. I could not see why I had to wait for the TSH to rise for me to be able to treat them.”
Eventually these diseases were named - fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and ME.
Dr S was called before the GMC for treating some patients with Natural Dessicated Thyroid Hormone (or levo) but the complaint did NOT come from patients.(I wonder who???) At his appearance the one before the last there were over 2,500 testimonials from grateful patients and the GMC bound them in nice Red Ledgers. He is a thorn in the side of the 'powers that be'.
He is not a miracle worker and some may find his method may not work but we are desperate people and we want answers instead of continuing ill-health and prescribed a myriad of medications instead of what we really need decent thyroid gland medications.
Dr Skinner was before the GMC for various reasons. Treating whilst the patient's blood results were within range, ( okayed by the GMC panel), treating with NDT and T3 and giving too high doses. All these were okayed by the GMC Panels. The testimonials though were not bound by the GMC. All the panels have been impressed by the support given to Dr. Skinner by his patients. At the first hearing there was a complaint by a patient, but if I remember rightly, the rest have been by doctors.
